Rene Meulensteen is set to become the new manager of Wigan this week.
The 49-year-old Dutchman has emerged as the man Latics chairman Dave Whelan wants to succeed Roberto Martinez, who is leaving the DW Stadium following relegation.
Meulensteen comes with winning pedigree – he helped Manchester United win four titles and the Champions League when first-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson since 2007. He began at Old Trafford in 2001, as youth and then reserves coach.
He rejected the chance to work with new boss David Moyes, and wants another shot at management despite an ill-fated six months in charge of Danish club Brondby in 2006. He is highly regarded by Ferguson, who brought him straight back to United after the Brondby episode.
Martinez is expected to be named Everton boss, which will spark a £2m claim from Wigan for compensation.
Worth the gamble.

Oh thank God for that. I thought it was going to be an unreliable source.

And he will feel at home (‘Time Team’) with our pitch after the egg chasers have finished with it ! ;)
4 June 2013 at 11:39 am #115289Not as important any more. You’ll be playing Bournemouth, Doncaster & Barnsley, not Man Utd, Spurs & Chelsea next year. Them pit village sides are used to a muddy churned up pitch like.
