I’m sure there’ll be alot of activity in the coming days purely on the “who’s leaving” rather than who’s coming in.
Scott Smiths the first player to bite the bullet. Some games he was solid then a few others he looked out his depth. It’s a shame really but I suppose that’s football just good luck to the lad, a local lad so let’s all wish him the best were ever he goes (bar Horwich).
Now if I were Danson I’d strike while the irons hot and get Taylor in on a 3 year then if he progresses the way he has done for us he’ll still be young enough to command a decent fee if we sell him on in a year or two.
McHugh might fall into through same trap as S.Smith along with Sessegnon and Macca. Out of all the loanees ? (bar Taylor)they’d all go in the blink of an eye.
If it were me Luke Robinson would have to get a new contract. He might not be the most technically gifted footballer but of late he’s come on leaps and bounds with his no nonsense high energy style of playing.
Out the 15 who’s times up Taylor & L.Robinson would be the only 2 I’d keep on. Then there’s 2 young lads in Joe Adams & Jack Reilly who tbh I don’t know much about so 11 would go if them 2 are kept on.
Oh I nearly forgot then, has Tom Watson signed because he’s due to leave.
Imagine, all 3 keepers shoot off
6 May 2025 at 1:06 pm #205689Scott Smith already been announced as leaving
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
7 May 2025 at 8:02 am #205709S.Smith wasn’t offered a new contract so it’s not of his making it’s the manager and the powers above. What you’d call as a slight push out the door.
I just hope A.Robinson leaves Fulham along with Gelhardt and any windfall is to bring in a few experienced players otherwise freebies and loans will mean we’ll float around like driftwood.
Next year will be super super tough probably the hardest L1 I can remember in a long time. We have Luton (still with parachute payments) Plymouth and Cardiff coming down along with Bradford coming up plus the 3 that fail in the play offs.
Without investment and strengthening the squad we’ll struggle like hell to even make the top half of the table.
I honestly thought after Danson’s takeover that this coming season the 2025-2026 would be our year to challenge for a top 6 and possible promotion.
All’s we’ve achieved is to slash the running cost and sell our best players. I can tell you this much, listening to the way Lowe talks no bullsh*t if the funds aren’t there he’ll let them above know
7 May 2025 at 5:42 pm #205713I’m lead to believe that the reason he left Knob End, was that the people above him in the Lilywhite hierarchy chose which players to recruit and thus he had very little say in transfer matters and budget.
8 May 2025 at 12:46 pm #205716Good luck to Scott wherever you end up , has always been nice to see academy lads come through and 71 appearances is no mean feat for a local lad.
He always did his best and id expect him to find a club in the EFL , league 2 club will no doubt be his destination.
8 May 2025 at 1:37 pm #205717And one of the main factors Lowe left Preston was,
Lowes last season at Preston was a real yo-yo of a season were his side would go on a winning streak say 5-6 on the trot followed by a losing streak.
Craig Hemmings the chairman then made a public statement at the end of the season saying the poor form was simply not good enough.
I think that hit Lowe hard as I don’t he was told this before it went to press. If your Chairman bad mouths your side in public without consulting the the manager and his team then all the trust at that point is lost.
15 May 2025 at 9:36 am #205737I was gutted when Scott Smith’s departure was announced; early in the season, I admit that I thought he looked like a bit of weak link whenever he played, but something seemed to click mid-season, and I thought he improved massively. In his last few games, he was just starting to look like a real player.
It seems an odd decision to release Scott, so I was trying to wrap my head around the rationale for that decision.
Ryan Lowe, it would seem, didn’t see what I saw, and Ryan’s the manager… I’m just some nobody on a forum, so fair enough, but I’d have given Scott another season to see if he continued to improve. I doubt he was getting paid megabucks, since he came through our own academy, so seems like a bit of a rash move to allow a player who was starting to show some real promise walk out for nothing if the cost to keep him on wasn’t going to be excessive.
Another possible explanation is that Scott himself felt that at 24, he’s not a kid anymore and that he’s ready to be playing more regularly, and Lowe couldn’t promise him that so he already had an eye on the door when his contract expired. I’ve got no doubt at all that Scott will find another club, so time will tell how he gets on. Wherever he lands, I wish him all the best (unless he lands at Bolton or Barnsley…).
Last possibility in my head is that knowing that he has to be frugal with the pennies, Lowe looked at the players we have in centre midfield and decided that Scott was the least likely to make an impact (especially with Matt Smith hopefully back from injury next season), so letting Scott go frees up a little bit of wage budget to use on either one of the younger academy lads he wants to come into the first team or maybe a new signing to strengthen in a different position without adding to the wage budget; like any new manager, Lowe’s going to want to bring in ‘his’ players, so will have to make some choices when the reality of our limited wage budget is factored in.
Baba Adeeko has also grown up massively as a player, going from a bit of a liability early doors to looking like an absolute powerhouse in the middle of the pitch by the end of the season – Baba definitely gets my ‘most improved player’ nod this season. If it was a straight choice to keep one and let one go, then I’d have to agree that Adeeko was the right one to keep.
Lastly, style of play no doubt comes into it. I’d criticised Scott a few times for being too negative: he was always looking to pass backwards (in the Martinez / Maloney mould). Adeeko was also guilty of that, but seems to have adapted better and more quickly to Lowe’s more direct style than Scott has.
On a side note, about style of play, Lowe’s style is very different from what we’ve seen in recent years, which is no bad thing: I hate possession based ‘fifty-passes-around-the-centre-circle-then-back-to-the-centre-half’ tactics we’ve seen for years and years and I much prefer Lowe’s more direct game as a spectacle. The games since Lowe arrived have been much more entertaining as a spectator imho. I appreciate that scoring goals is still a problem, but at least we were actually starting to get forward in bigger numbers and put balls into the box… the basic recipe for scoring goals… and with more coaching and a full pre-season in the ‘new’ style, combined with a couple of signings whose natural style of play is more suited to Lowe’s tactics, we will *hopefully* see a dramatic upturn in our ‘goals for’ column – defensively, we’ve pretty much got it nailed, so adding goals into our mix will make us a real threat to the playoff places next year if we can achieve it. With the slow paced tip-tap football we’ve been playing for years, we’d pretty much hit a plateau: playing that way successfully needs very good players (at the level): players that we realistically couldn’t afford.
For the first time in a good few years, I’m actually looking forward to next season with genuine hope that we may have something to celebrate at the end of the season; after two years of consolidation (no bad thing after the turmoil we’d been through before that), it’s time to kick on and be more ambitious, at least within the bounds of financial common sense. Appointing a manager who plays a different way was a huge step in doing that, and whilst Maloney is a legend on the pitch, I think that as a manager, letting him go was the right decision: his style of play wasn’t ever going to make waves with the players Latics can afford, so we’d have just had another season of inconsistency and treading water in mid-table.
I’m a bit sad that Scott Smith won’t be a part of that, since he’s ‘one of our own’ and it’s always brilliant to see our academy lads come through and make an impact, but we have to put our trust in Ryan Lowe and his team that it’s the right decision for the club and for Scott himself. Eight games unbeaten to close out the season tells me that there’s good reason to be optimistic about what next season holds for Latics; I hope that wherever Scott lands, he enjoys some success too.
15 May 2025 at 5:31 pm #205738Heard rumours last night that Lowe desperate to get Ryan Ledson in from Preston. Allegedly not happy there ….would be a brilliant signing if he’s willing to drop down a league and would certainly add that “s###house steel we desperately need. Would imagine though other championship teams would be interested though…..let’s see !!

16 May 2025 at 4:44 pm #205741Yes, Mr B: heard that about 4 weeks ago.
Ledson played about 85% of games for the Knobbers, under the guidance of Ryan Lowe. He’s a born scouser, so a good fit with RLs strategy. His partner is Lucy Fallon, aka Bethany Platt of Corrie Fame; so that alone will get a few extra in the West Stand
17 May 2025 at 11:54 am #205744I mentioned it a few weeks ago on here. He’s out of contract at the end of June and told Preston he’s not signing so it will be all about the money if he comes to us.
Now bare in mind, the lads 27 and this next deal (no doubt 3 years min) will be his money spinner before he hits 30 so can we afford what he wants?, let’s see how deep Danson’s Oxford bags pockets are
another thing, I’ve not read much on him or heard of him but apparently he’s very very good friends with Lowe.
Preston have turned down the opportunity to sign Sam Greenwood who was on loan from Leeds last season. The players definitely lost his way of late. He can play as an attacking mid or forward, dropping down a League might ignite the flame. It’s those type of players we should be looking at, players who have lost their way or they simply haven’t found the club that fits both style and personality.
As for Ledson?, we have to put our faith in Lowe and whoever he chooses to sign and if Lowe says yes then we have to go with it, as simple as that
