It was the third of April 1999 and after scoring a penalty for Liverpool against local rivals Everton at Anfield striker Robbie Fowler infuriated opposition fans by appearing to simulate snorting cocaine by rubbing his nose along the six yard line.
The media reaction was one of complete outrage and Liverpool fined him the maximum permissable and warned him as to his future conduct. If the club’s prompt action was designed to bring the matter to a swift conclusion they failed because the F.A. went on to fine him a further £32,000 and ban him for four matches.
