Well I saw an article at the weekend in a paper and it absolutely both caught my eye, and stunned me.
Apparently, the Spanish league is in a major financial crisis, with many clubs (Not Barca or Real Madrid, obviously) being in such a bad state that they reckon La Liga is going to be the, and I quote, ‘bargain basement’ for football transfers.
It went on to list several players, saying what Englishg club could be suited to moving for them, and it said what a quality buy Michu has been for Swansea.
The bit that absolutely stunned me most though, was the revelation that Athletic Bilbao are among the cash-strapped clubs, and could be looking to offload star striker Fernando Llorente for as little as £3 million! That is nuts, because less than a year ago, they were talking £20-30 million for him.
If it is right about him being so cheap to obtain, it would be a no-brainer for me for an English club to move for him. I’m not saying us, but anybody. £3 million? Dear god! I’d offer that, AND chuck in Di Santo and Boselli as part of the deal!
And yes, if it’s true about cheap bargains in Spain, I would expect our manager to be ready to move, as I would expect him to be knowledgable about that league in particular.

Not just that they are planning to implement a 56% tax band for top earners

When I was over in Barca last March, got talking to an ex-pat in a bar. He told me that the tax authorities over there are something else. It’s not like here where they only have so much power over your money. Over there it seems they are constantly messing up on peoples tax payments and its not unusual for someone to get a letter telling them that they suddenly owe 500 Euro’s in unpaid tax. Unbelievably, but apparently true, the tax people over there have the ability to go and take it straight out of your bank account without telling you first!
The lad told me he had gone into his bank and it was only through his bank manager giving him a tip-off that a withdrawal of 500 euro’s was imminent that allowed him to pull his money out of the account to prevent them getting it. Apparently it’s rife.
It sounds as if people have to be forever withdrawing funds and changing accounts in order to beat the whims of the Spanish authorities who, for all intents and purposes, are STEALING people’s money.
Crazy.

Not as daft as it sounds that the same is happening in France 75% tax band for top earners maybe why so many French league players are coming here now
23 January 2013 at 1:41 am #100964Dave Whelan doesn’t condone the influx of foreign players and managers does he !
23 January 2013 at 2:54 am #100982The list may have some flaws ! Here is one such flaw and there could be more but I cant be bothered going into it right now. If any of you lot can add to the ‘Flaw List’ feel free !

Think it’s more to do with his contract being up in June (and he said he definitely wasn’t signing another) so they were basically trying to get what they could for him instead of losing him for nowt 6 months later!
But, looks like he’s going to Juve on a free in the summer now.

Whether it’s true or not I find it staggering that no English club has made a move for him, as he’s looked a great striker. For 3 million…..it’s a no brainer that.
