Personally I’m not sure why Gerrard always get overlooked.

I dont know who deserves to captain their country the least.

I would have thought so.Gerard’s been captain when Terry and Ferdinand haven’t been playing, so I’d presume he’s now the regular captain.
It is really difficult to pick a deserving captain. They all seem to have some sort of stigma attached to them. The ones that haven’t, Hart is full of arrogance and never agreed with keepers being captains anyway and Lampard doesn’t play much these days. Gerrard, Rooney, Cole, The experienced senior Enlgish players in general have a chequered past. I don’t think Rooney is anywhere near mentally mature enough to lead a national side. He is far to petulant. Beckham is the best captain we have had for a while.
Out of the current squad, And not being biased i see no better candidate than Leighton Baines. Cleverley in the future.

I think the qualities you need for being a worthy captain are having the respect of your team mates, being able to motivate players on the field of play and to lead by example. Rooney ticks all those boxes. I also think the extra responsibility of being captain would temper his petulance and make him a more mature and effective player. Beckham was petulant but was a good captain. Rooney would be the same. For me a good call by Hodgson.
