Just a general thread on what improvements can be made to our performances. Please leave out the roberto/whelan bashing otherwise I’d prefer the mods to close the thread.

I personally think we need to take it back to basic 4-4-2 football. Simply on the fact that I’ve noticed that when we are chasing a game we seem to do a whole lot better when we push up and when we nearly have 2 out and out attackers and 4 across the midfield. So if our performance improves like this when we are chasing, I think it should be adapted from the start. I think a lot of the problem stems from not having men in the box when balls are going in. It is very difficult to score from outside the box all the time.

I think I would set it up 4-4-2 with the following squad when fit – habsi, boyce, alcaraz, caldwell/lopez, figs, stam (playing right midfield), mccarthy, gomez, moses, di santo/rodellage, mcmanaman/sammon.

I was intially thinking that go against the norm and put more defensive minded players in left and right midfield areas so jones and stam and have more attacking players in the centre as we tend to do most of our attacking through the centre anyway.

I believe our forwards can score but not as a lone striker. The likes of sammon would be more suited to the van nistleroy approach and just lurch around the box, as with mcmanaman. Then your second striker like di santo and rodellega can be the ones that get into all areas cause problems with their pace…they also need to be told to don’t panic or stay calm when they are about to shoot as it comes across as they rush themselves and often put the ball blazing over.

Defensively, caldwell and alcaraz just need to be more aware not to foul players and not to lose the head. They need to be aware that they dont have the speed therefore don’t stay too tight to their men. We’ve been caught out like this before! Caldwell needs to play a bigger part as captain and not make silly mistakes like easily fouling players in or around the box.

Probably most importantly there needs to be unity amongst our supporters. We are a small club with a small fan base and we should come together as a community. Even on these forums i’ve noticed a divide and unfriendlyness from some. I posted before looking for tickets and because I wasn’t known I was immediately called a fan of another club, when the case is Im a supporter from Ireland finding hard to get tickets as I’m not on the system. Lets face it if opposition fans wanted to get tickets to our part of the stadium it wouldn’t be that hard as we don’t fill the stands anyway. We need to put aside the martinez/whelan debates, its the way things are and you make the best of that, so put up and shut up and get behind your team. We have a young squad and we want to keep these players with us even if we face relegation and the only hope we may have of keeping them is getting behind them as a unified force and let them know we will support them no matter what. Loyality in people in the game is making a revival so we need to be aware of that.

      Other thoughts and opinions…
And before the keyboard lovers post…the above is all my own opinion. I’m looking for others thoughts and opinions, not to be slated as I’ve come to expect on here.

I personally liked the 3-5-2 prior to Christmas with Sammon & Moses starting and Rodallega & Di Santo coming on towards the end.

It all changed after Sammon was sent off against Man U, and never really reverted back to that for some reason.

I commend your enthusiasm, but I fear all the plans are already in place, and there won’t be much change for the rest of this season.
The towel has well and truly been thrown in and the fat lady is starting to limber up her vocal chords.
Give up now with you optimism and save it for our assault on the Championship next season.
Everyone concerned with the club has obviously already done this so why should we keep harping on about how to change things. We’ve been doing it all season and it hasn’t made one iota of difference.
I just hope we retain some of the better players in the summer, and rid ourselves of all the greedy mercanries that have polluted our club.
The future is bright financially, but the future is unfortunately the Championship.
Roll on August when we may even start to enjoy going to matches again.

        Fooking ‘ell Horc.

Due to Wigan Athletic cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel will be switched off until further notice.

Just an opinion, and the way I feel at the moment. The last few seasons have taken their toll mate.

          Altogether now!!!!

‘We’re shit and we know we are, we’re shit and we know we are, we’re shit….and we know we are, we’re shit and we know we are.’

We just have to face up to it, grin and bear it and re build for next season.

Look I know things are very frustrating seeing us well rooted to the bottom of the table. People tend to blame team and staff, but something that should never change is a persons enthuasiasm for the game and giving our opinions on how things should be done and us all showing our “managerial” skills through chat. We may well be getting relegated, but that doesn’t mean the club is over, there still will be a club and we need to be the same cheerful crowd as always. Unfortuneately this campaign has been a tough one for us and us as supporters to watch and we can all point blame but this is what football is all about, this is why we all love the game. You just have to take the bad with the good sometimes. We are all here for one reason and one reason only…WIGAN ATHLETIC…so why divide ourselves, support our team no matter what! Its why we follow the game!Even if deep down we know Wigan may be getting relegated, why cut support until next season…live for today my friend! And who knows anything can happen in football.

And its not that we are shit…its just that there are other teams slightly better than us at the moment. We are a small club in top tier football after all.

I will always support my club no matter which league we are in, that is never in doubt.

By your own admittance you haven’t visited the JJB/DW too often so you can’t really know the shit that has been served up over the last year or two.

Supporting this manager and his squad is at times very testing, but I will be there to the bitter end don’t worry about that.

Here’s a first Standish – I agree with you. Although i would like to see it with Jones & Diame in the middle, Figueroa at left wing back & the back 3 of Alcaraz/caldwell/Boyce. Possibly with Moses & Crusat/Beausejour in the not quite wingers/not quite forwards rols

See, we do occasionally have something in common aside from sharing the same first name. ;)

                the Championship.

Thank God supporters like you are ,on the whole ,in the minority. When the going gets tough…….

As for the formation , I’m with Standish & Tyldesley – get back to December’s “fairly ” successful lineup – but with Fig at wing back & Jones , McCarthy & Diame in the middle. Get Moses on the ball more & lets start picking up points.

Give up ? – only wussies give up !!!

Well if you see me at a game be sure to say hello coz I haven’t the foggiest who you are – in fact at the moment I don’t have a game to ref on Saturday so I may well be heading down to the DW to hurl abuse at Bobby!! Lord help anyone who applauds or encourages them!!

Only one comment Richcrx, how the hell can you even contemplate leaving out our best performing midfield player by a country mile.
Momo Diame has the makings of a world class player and I hope we get the chance to see him develop into that whilst playing in the premier league with Wigan Athletic for a few more years. goodpost

Easy on lads, lets not start at people for sharing their opinions. At the end of the day everyone of us support the club in some form or another.

                    @horc
                    – yah true I’ve never been to a game before, but on the flip side of that I haven’t missed any Wigan game yet unless there was no stream available online. Imagine my frustration sitting watching the match for the full 90 minutes every time and wanting to be there to shout your team on but can’t. Also the times when your stream dies and your shouting and frantically trying to get it back up! To be honest I’d prefer if I could go to the DW week in and week out. Gone are the days at least when I used to have to follow wigan just through text as there were no streams when we were down the tables.

@jrfatfan- it was a toss up between diame and mccarthy for me and as I felt gomez would provide the decesive through balls to the two of them. When looking at mccarthy and diame, for me personally, I think mccarthy is having a slightly better season than diame.Only by the tiniest margins though. Diame is an athletic player with great ability and can score as we’ve seen. But I can’t help but think that he got lucky on a few of his bursting runs that the ball has fell nicely for him. McCarthy is a dogged young lad who never gives up and I think he plays an intellegent game in his position. Just personal preference really.

As for 3-5-2 formation…It was great against the big clubs but against the lesser clubs we need to be going at them more and not sitting back as we do have the beaten of them and for me I think the 3-5-2 formation would be useless against similar clubs to our self.

I wouldn’t like to say tactically how we can improve, that’s why Bob’s on a good wedge to try and get that bit right. What i do know is some players wanna put a shift in week in week out.
Spurs first half they were ambling around , 2nd half their was no change tactically bar hard work and the improvement showed.
They should give em all a few day’s in a local Factory 12hr shift and let them see what their missing it might bring a few of them back down to earth.

Fair play to you mate, I yearn to have that enthusiasm back.
Anyway, the next time you fancy coming over for a match, PM me on here and I’ll get your ticket for you, (I’m not paying for it though).
It will also get your name on the database for future visits.
