Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is delighted six of his squad will be playing at the World Cup.
As expected, Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas were named in the Honduras squad alongside ex-Latics midfielder Wilson Palacios.
There were also call-ups for Richard Kingson (Ghana), Vladimir Stojkovic (Serbia) and Won-Hee Cho, who returned to his native South Korea on loan in January to safeguard his national spot and has been rewarded with selection.
Wigan’s sixth representative will be Steve Gohouri, who has capped a memorable week personally by making Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Ivory Coast squad just days after penning a two-year contract at the DW.
And Whelan says the whole club will receive a boost from the exposure generated by the magnificent six on show.
He told the Wigan Evening Post: “The profile of the club is already fantastically high, as we prepare for a sixth season in the Premier League.
“Win or lose, we are watched by a huge number of people worldwide who know who Wigan Athletic are.
“And when we get six players representing you at the World Cup, it’s just a fantastic tribute to our club and our town.”
Didnt know gohouri had made it, glad he has, the Ivory Coast are my team to upset a few i reckon
14 May 2010 at 3:22 pm #33424Ivory Coast are are the best african team and are one of the best teams outside the favourites. However they are in the same group as Portugal and Brazil and cant see them getting out of that group.

ivory coast are not the best african team….
14 May 2010 at 3:27 pm #33426I think they are. I no Egypt won the african cup of nations but they arnt at the world cup
14 May 2010 at 3:53 pm #33429Gohouri has made the initial 30, not guarenteed to make the final cut.
Its too close to call who will finish the strongest out the African teams. Ivory Coast have the hardest group and if they come 2nd to Brazil or Portugal then face Spain in the 2nd round.
14 May 2010 at 4:43 pm #33431Its between Ivory Coast and Ghana for the best team in Africa. Depends though if Essien plays for Ghana as he is very much their main mon. Ghana also won the Under 20 World Cup in Jan. (I think it was under 20) and some of their players looked brilliant. Just depends if they can make the step up.
14 May 2010 at 5:13 pm #33436Ghana also have a world class keeper playing for them
14 May 2010 at 5:22 pm #33438Ghana also have a world class keeper playing for them  :D
You’re not wrong. Although he somehow looks half decent playing for Ghana. Is that Serbian cat first choice for his national team? They may as well play rush goalie for all the use he is.
14 May 2010 at 5:25 pm #33439Yep he is first choice and they are in the same group as Ghana doubt that will finish 0-0
