If ever there was an example of not involving politics in sport it must be Whelan’s request for a minute’s silence at Saturday’s match. Does he not realise that possibly thousands of fans (and indeed some players) may not hold her in the same regard as he does. In fact some may have despised the woman. Why should these people be asked to stand in silence. Why can’t he engage his brain before he opens his mouth
11 April 2013 at 2:58 pm #108766I couldn’t agree more. I hold David Whelan in the highest regard for his achievements and what he has done/is doing for the people of Wigan but …. sometimes I wonder what planet he is on. All it will succeed in doing is giving a platform to people who thrive on social division.
11 April 2013 at 3:18 pm #108773I’ve always stuck up for DW but the fact he his asking supporters of a town deep in mining history to have a minutes silence for the butcher of the industry is a insult
11 April 2013 at 3:25 pm #108776It really does beggar belief that he thougt this was anything other than a rank bad idea.

11 April 2013 at 6:13 pm #108818In his defence, whilst he did bang on about what a fantastic woman she was & leave you in no doubt as to his political affiliations, he did also say that regardless of which party they represented then any former PM who dies should be given a minutes silence out of respect of their service to the country.
Not saying I agree with pretty much anything he said in that interview, nor would I observe a minutes silence but when he qualifies his belief with the above it puts it into a slightly different context
