I am a master of fine timing and I had to start running many years ago, usually in a last minute dash to catch either a train to see my girlfriend of the moment or a bus to avoid waiting in Lake district rain for the next bus to arrive in over an hour. Then I met Ali and the run was over!!

Those sprints kind of got me started, so 30 years ago I ran my first long run. The Coniston 14. At the 13.1094 miles marker (half marathon) I gasped a sigh of relief and was delighted I wasn’t running a marathon. 10 years later I did run a marathon and to this day I am sure I am still in the essential warm down and recovery phase. Now, when the battle of the duvet loses I manage to drag myself off for the 5km ParkRun on a fairly regular basis. For the old codger that I am, I’m quite content with that. It gives me the ideal excuse to doze and do very little for the rest of Saturday as I feign near collapse resulting from apparent exhaustion. It means I get looked after very well by Ali!!

Why though, Wigan 10k when I live in Coventry? Initially because it seemed like a fun weekend – to come up for a game, stay the night and do the run. But there are no games that weekend. Planning perfection!! The reserve reason is that a few in WS7 (where I sit) asked if I was doing it. I’m a gullible mug and assumed that the question implied they were doing it, so I said ‘yes’. I don’ think they are!!

But I get stacks of great fun when I come up to Wigan for home games. It’s a great friendly welcoming place, where I have had a lot of laughs and happiness. My bag of ‘great Wigan memories’ is quite full. I know it’s a cliche, but what the hec, it just seemed like a good opportunity for me, as an out-of-towner to give a tiny little bit back to a place that has helped me a lot, and given me some real happiness (and frustrations)!!

As you will know I’m collecting for Wigan Athletic Community Trust. The following link is for their impact report: http://www.wiganlatics.co.uk/news/article/wigan-athletic-community-trust-impact-report-2016-3111646.aspx

It tells you a little more about what the Wigan Athletic Community Trust does.

If after reading all this you feel inclined to sponsor me, I will be delighted and most grateful. But what I do know is that there will be many people in Wigan who will be stacks more grateful and delighted than I will be, because its not my running that is much good ….. it’s the fantastic work of the Wigan Athletic Community Trust that is.

If you good people would like to donate to the wonderful Wigan Athletic Comminunity trust then please do so by going to ‘Just Giving’ and searching for:

      IhaventaclueRichard or https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/IhaventaclueRichard

And if you want to get the jist of what happens at wigan you can get that at my blog ….. which gives accounts of various things that go on in Wigan with Wigan Athletic FC. over the past few years. Click here: https://ihaventacluerichard.wordpress.com/2016/07/

I’ll be in Wigan Central after the run doing essential rehydration. If you do sponsor me, come along, make yourself known to me as a very generous person and I’ll buy you a drink.

      Thanks …….
      IHACRichard.
