With Hindsight…..

….perhaps I was in the wrong yesterday.

It’s just that here we are, as we are every summer, and every tom, dick, and spud head is being linked with our better players. I’m damn fed up of it. Ok, we ARE Wigan Athletic. If the likes of Villa or Everton, or even teams above them come knocking, then we’ll always find it hard to say no, and prevent a player leaving. I can understand and accept that.

But whilst I admit that, in stature, Sunderland are a bigger club than ourselves, it pains me that we have sold one of our key players, and the probable captain to them. They are rivals of ours in the ‘3 tier’ league which we find ourselves in. And then there is the reported low fee. The mind boggles. So yeah, with that, I was really annoyed.

Granted, I reacted too much and too soon over the Stoke rumours, regarding them offering 7 million and Beattie for Rodallega. It was just paper talk (though more than one) and I shouldn’t have reacted. I do however, stand by the fact that I would be ‘gutted’ if we did that deal, and eneded up with Beattie.

I still feel we’ll lose another player. By all accounts, we’ve been talking with PSV about this Salcido. So if any player will go, it looks like being Figueroa. But if it’s to Liverpool, then fair enough. I’m not sure he’s good enough for them, but there you go.

When all is said and done, Martinez has stated that he wants to build his own team. We all know that spud-head brought in Figueroa, Rodallega, and N’Zogbia. Perhaps in the long run, they will leave and be replaced by Martinez’ signings, though I get the feeling he (Martinez) is a big fan of N’Zogbia, especially, and feels he’s a key player. But at the end of the day, Martinez will either succeed or fail by his own decisions. I actually LIKE his ideas of playing the game. Spain played a similar system and it worked mighty fine for them. Perhaps it’s true, that he felt Bramble was not suited to the system? (Nor in my mind, was Paul Scharner) I think we all noticed how good Alcaraz looked on the ball, in the World Cup. Under Martinez’ system, Bramble did look quite panicky, didn’t he?

I really do hope it all works out, and we end up with a decent enough season, and a team that plays some good football.
