Gary from Hong Kong  Could we not have picked Sukan Medik from Tirana or something?
Wigan Athletic fan Gary Winstanley from Tuen Mun in Hong Kong is one of 72 overseas supporters that is in with a chance of winning a trip to the UK to see their team play, after being shortlisted to win The Football League’s ‘Stand Up & Be Counted’ campaign.
3 December 2015 at 3:31 am #146041Unsurprising that most of the 513 were from Australia, where the town of Wigan has been famous for a long time.
3 December 2015 at 11:29 am #146042I thought you would be undercover in Syria by now.

I take it you’ve broken them down by state/city/suburb to prove that – or is it just a cheap shot to try and look smart in front of your mates?
513 worldwide fans after 8 premier league seasons and an FA Cup win isn’t the fantastic global appeal that some on here would have everyone believe.
3 December 2015 at 3:13 pm #146046Nobody has ever stated we have fans worldwide because of course we know full well that we don’t.
What we have stated is that the World has HEARD of us whereas they haven’t a clue who Wigan RL are. In Egypt I had a Wigan rugby top on and the guy started talking to me about Amr Zaki. Did he play in the same team as Billy Boston?
RL is played in 3 states in Oz at pro level and one of them is a massive minority that would have folded years ago if the league didn’t own them. Soccer is played and watched nationwide. I actually watched Latics game live when I was at the 08 World Cup. You do the maths on whether people in Adelaide or Perth have heard of Wigan Athletic.

It’s actually the national sport in Papua New Guinea.
3 December 2015 at 3:33 pm #146050I guess 24th out of 72 ain’t that bad really, top third spot!

It was a toss up between that and cannibalism
3 December 2015 at 4:00 pm #146052I know Wikipedia isn’t exactly the most authoratitive source but:
“Papua New Guinean rugby league has been hampered by the poor infrastructure in the country, and national competitions have proven difficult to sustain. Violence at large games has also become increasingly of a problem, and nations are reluctant to tour Papua New Guinea due to safety concerns. Nonetheless rugby league continues as a sport, and is played sporadically across the nation, with competitions in major cities and some rural regions alike.”
It IS the most popular sport there, I concede

You’re right, and I must apologise for forgetting the world power that is PNG!3 December 2015 at 4:25 pm #146056I know Wikipedia isn’t exactly the most authoratitive source but:“Papua New Guinean rugby league has been hampered by the poor infrastructure in the country, and national competitions have proven difficult to sustain. They best get that sorted if they’re to host games in the World Cup in 2017.
7 December 2015 at 2:19 am #146129We have a girl from Romania who works in our place and says Wigan Athletic are very famous, honestly.. :)
Used to have a girl from South Africa who’s brother (still over there) had his own little WAFC supporters “sky TV club” going on over there.
That may have changed over the past two or three years though :pinch: -
