We’ve gone through our versions of the great news that Roberto Martinez will be staying at Wigan Athletic, but here is the official club statement….

Wigan Athletic are delighted to announce that Roberto Martinez has agreed to a new contract to remain as Manager of the club.

Martinez has reiterated his desire to continue his work with Wigan Athletic that began upon his return in 2009 and has seen the club achieve a seventh season in the Barclays Premier League.

The news brings an end to speculation in the media regarding Martinez’s personal future, and the Manager is now eager to begin work ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.

After agreeing the deal Martinez said:

“Over the last two years the Chairman has been very supportive to me and loyal, and now I feel I need to be loyal and supportive back to him.

“I haven’t finished my job at Wigan Athletic; there is much work still to be done, I don’t know how long that will take but such is the belief that I have always had that I would only ever decide to move once the club is ready for a new Manager.”

Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson has added:

“We are delighted that Roberto will be continuing the hard work he and his staff started back in 2009, and as a club we are all looking forward with excitement to our seventh season in the Barclays Premier League.

“We at Wigan Athletic; the staff, players and fans, all have a role to play in continuing the progression and growth of our club, and having Roberto at the heart of that process is hugely important.”
