Latics were hoping the level of commitment would carry on here at Peterborough as we take on the league leaders. The gaffer made two changes to the win in midweek, and we started off very well, containing Posh and creating some good chances.
Lang was bossing the wing and went close early on before Mark Beevers went in two footed on Otabor and everybody on the pitch waited for the red card to be branded, it wasn’t and the home captain gets away with a yellow.
Latics went on though and continued to pressure, with Tilt, Wootton and Massey have decent chances blocked or saved.
The defence seemed equally on good form as they matched all their hosts had to throw at them, Ojo, Tilt and Darikwa really look to be gelling well now.
The pitch is on a similar par to ours, looking more like a ploughed field in areas rather grass and didn’t help either team play flowing football.
The half ended 0-0 and Latics will take heart from having the better chances.
The second half started like the first with Latics being camped in the Peterborough half, Otabor had the best chance but his shot was straight at the keeper.
Posh then came into it and showed why they are top of the league, Demelee’s class showing through and he went close to breaking the dealock but \Jamie Jones was up to the challenge.
Szmodic started linking up with Dembelee and things started to look a bit scary for us in the next phase, again Jones saved well from Harris. We looked good on the counter though and Lang and again forced a save from Pym.
Gardner was now the lead man for us and created some great plays. Somehow the score remained goalless as Lang, Otabor and Darikwa should have scored.
It was end to end for a bit without either team pushing the ball in the onion bag. Then a freak corner from Aasgaard went straight in with Pym left flat footed, it was a lead we deserved. After the 5 minutes previous when we looked we score from superb play, it was a crazy but welcome goal from the Norwegian.
We just now needed to keep level heads and not concede any stupid goals. And we did just that with us defending two corners well.
The game go t a bitty and scrappy which helped Wigan as the stop starting broke the Peterborough momentum up. Soloman-Otabor has been really impressive on the break.
With 8 minutes to goo though, Peterborough went down the left side, crossed and Harris banged home. 90 seconds later Darikwa felled Dembele and Harris scored his second from the spot. What a 3 minutes that was, from being comfortable at 1-0 to losing 2-1. Look back at the replays, it was a very soft decision for the penalty.
Peterborough resorted to going down under any tackle and the referee in the most part fell for it. Otabor did go close but Pym was equally matched to his effort.
The referee had a chance to make amends for the penalty decision against us, but he didn’t this time feel there was enough contact on Robinson when he went over in the box on 93 minutes. There was certainly more contact than on Dembele, that’s for sure.
At the death, Dodoo rattled a shot at goal only for Pym to save, nothing came from the resulting corner and the whistle was blown for full time.
In summary, we played well, didn’t deserve to lose and need still to learn in defence. The referee made three huge howlers in not sending off Mark Beevers on 12 minutes and falling for the dive of Dembele for the penalty, but not giving us a penalty when Robinson was clearly pulled down.
