Latics win 4-3 on penalties

Hugo Rodallega played an hour in his first pre-season appearance for Latics, as the Reserves won through on penalties against neighbours Bolton Wanderers. Ronnie Stam also played an hour as he steps back to full fitness, while Chris Kirkland played the full game.

Kirkland saved two penalties in the shootout, and also made two excellent saves during the 90 minutes as he came through the game unscathed.

Rodallega looked sharp, especially early on, striking the post in the first half, while young winger Steve Boothman had Latics’ best chance, Bolton keeper Jay Lynch making a good stop.

Rodallega only returned to England a week ago and manager Martinez says last season’s Golden Boot winner is in good shape. “Hugo had a good tournament with Colombia in the Copa America and there is no problem with his fitness. He will be ready.”

For the record, Daniel Redmond, Jordan Rugg, Adam Buxton and Roman Golobart were on the mark from the penalty spot.

The game was held at Christopher Park Training Ground

Latics: Kirkland; Stam (Buxton, 60), Golobart, Robinson, Mustoe; Redmond,Chow, Dawson (Watson, 71); Boothman, Myler; Rodallega (Rugg, 60)
Subs: Hare, Morris
