As if our defence isn’t stretched enough, Antolin Alcaraz’s spitting incident could cost Wigan Athletic more than just the three points against Wolves as the FA investigate the charge.
The FA will look into the furore that followed Berra felling Alcaraz in the box for a certain penalty that the ref missed, in which Latics centre half is said to have spat on one of the Wolves players as they tried to imply that he dived.
The TV cameras were there in force as SKY were televising the 3-1 loss, and it looks like Alcaraz does spit, but whether he was really directing it at the Wolves player only he knows. He has 36 hours in which to respond to the charge.
The FA said: “Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz has been charged by the FA for spitting at an opponent. The incident, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, relates to his side’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“The player has until 6pm on November 8, 2011 to respond to the charge. If the player admits the charge he may accept an automatic three-match suspension.”
