Back to back wins would see Wigan Athletic to within a whisker of safety against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this coming St George’s Day.

Latics will be looking for back to back wins for the first time this season as we face ex-manager Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the North East this Saturday.

The Black Cats are on an horrendous run picking up just a win and a draw since hit man Darren bent was sold in the January transfer window (remind you of anything?).

They have picked up just one point in their last eight league games and we could do with them continuing that run just for one more game, a win for us would take us to 37 points and leave us with a bit of breathing space at the bottom of the table.

Latics on the other hand are coming off the back of some really good performances, the last one giving us an emphatic 3-1 win over Blackpool that got us out of the bottom three and should give confidence to the lads going into the next set of games.

We also seem to be staying away from injuries which will help our cause no end, Rodallega and Charles look to have found some real good form and the team seem to be relishing the challenge.

The ideal set of results would see us beat Sunderland on St George’s Day, get something out of Everton at home and Villa away, then relegate West Ham whilst making us safe going into the last game with no pressure.

But as we all know, football isn’t as easy as that. The teams around us have top league opposition this weekend, so although winning isn’t essential it would be a really nice bonus for us to take into the last four games.

Sunderland does have some injury troubles still and Cattermole always seems to be a bit rash against us. Historically we have fared better than our hosts; we have only lost once against them in the last eight league games and we should have too much for them this time as well.

The Black Cats themselves are probably only one win away from safety themselves, but they are in a rut and hopefully we will capitalise on it.
