Mario Melchiot has said his farewells to Wigan Athletic as he signs for Umm Salal of Qatar. The 33 year old defender has served us well and everybody at Cockney Latic wishes him well.
The 33-year-old Dutchman’s contract officially ran out on Tuesday and as he felt he wasn’t getting any younger he felt the time was right to move on rather tan put his body through the rigours of another top flight season.
He made 33 appearances last season and was yet again Club Captain, having been a talisman for Latics he will now go to Umm Salal to share his knowledge in the Middle East. He boasts an impressive playing career having turned out for Chelsea, Rennes, Ajax and of course Latics, but he will spend the next two seasons helping the Arabic game along.
