Wigan Athletic have been handed a home game against Champion League winners Chelsea, at the DW Stadium for our opening game of the 2012 – 2013 season, closing with a home game against Aston Villa.
The fixtures computer has mixed up the top teams for Latics, in the past we have had a bad run of playing them ‘on the bounce’, but they are evenly spread across the season this time.
After the opener against Chelsea we make a first ever trip to St Mary’s Stadium to play Southampton for the first time in the league. I remember making the trip down there on a ‘special train’ set up by the club for our only other game against the South coast outfit in the FA Cup…. I won’t be doing that again this year – the Supporters Club coach or a plane for me.
Boxing Day sees us play Everton at Goodison Park and we are at home against Manchester united on New Year’s Day. Our last away game of the season is against Arsenal, weekender on the cards there for the trip to the Emirates.
We play League Champions Manchester City on November 22nd at the DW Stadium whilst our other local game sees Liverpool come to Wigan on March 2nd.
All in all it looks good to go for Bobby (I think) to carry on where he left off and show that you can be a top ten force without the huge name the media thinks you need to succeed.
