LEAGUE ONE – DW STADIUM

Tuesday 2nd March 2021

WIGAN ATHLETIC

0 – 1
CHARLTON ATHLETIC
ANEKE (19)

Wigan went into this game high on good performances without the points they deserved, this game was to prove no different.

The Hull game apart, Latics could have won all of their last 9 games, registering only 6 points for their graft.

Tonight Charlton came to the DW Stadium looking to get their play off hopes back on track and Latics will have thought their performances must at some point start converting to points.

We started off much the brighter of the two teams, with Dodoo going close with a header and Massey pulling out a great save some from Amos in the Addicks goal.

We had a lot of the early exchanges but a defensive mix up on 18 minutes gave us a big hill to climb as Charlton’s top scorer accepted the gift to slot past the helpless Jones.

Wigan kept up the pressure though and Aasgaard went close whilst the visitors resorted to falling over or fouling to break up our tempo.

Another defensive error gave Charlton only their second opportunity, but Jones was alert to it and saved well.

On the stroke of half time, we had an exceptional chance to score with Aasgaard again testing the keeper, from the resulting corner Otabor narrowly grazed the crossbar.

The second half went on in the same vein as we pushed to get the equaliser, Aasgaard again creating opportunities. A great move between Dodoo, Otabor and Massey could and should have level the score, but again the busy Amos was up to the challenge.

Dodoo came more into the game and had a couple of wayward shots. Tile headed wide from 8 yards when the goal beckoned and Otabor went close again near the death.

Even the impressive Aasgaard could not find a way through as his was the last chance of the game, again brilliantly saved by Amos. From the corner we sent the shot way off target.

One thing I hadn’t seen for quite some time, was a referee not brandishing a card, well done Sam Allison

We really need these performances to start telling the real story, register those points, get clear of the bottom, and start to build for next season.

I feel for the lads, they have done more than enough to get 15+ in the last ten games, with just 6 to show for it.

We go again against MK Dons on Saturday, let’s hope a certain striker isn’t on fire and we see and turning point with a Latics win.
