The other day I was asked an interesting question; which players would make it in to the Wigan Athletic Premier League XI? Following is who I would choose….
Being in the Premier League for just five years, kind of restricts me to wjo I can choose, but here goes (see the message board HERE to add your views):
GK – Mike Pollitt (2005 – ) This is due to his fantastic service throughout the Premier League years and his particular efforts during our first season.
RB – Pascal Chimbonda (2005 – 2006) A player who became a fans favourite in our first season. Provided a lot of support from right back and was a true character at the club.
CB – Arjan DeZeeuw (1999 – 2002, 2005 – 2007) A club legend in his own right. Arjan always gave 100% to the Wigan Athletic cause and was always reliable.
CB – Titus Bramble (2007 – ) Since joining in 2007, Titus has proved to be a rock in the Latics defence and a complete professional for the Latics cause.
LB – Leighton Baines (2002 – 2007) After helping Wigan rise through the leagues, Baines was a strong player for Latics in the Premier League and provided a lot of fire power as well as a solid defender.
RM – Luis Antonio Valencia (2006 – 2009) A fantastic player who got his dream move. Valencia provided the team with pace and quality.
CM – Jimmy Bullard (2003 – 2006) Jimmy was a character at the club with a great footballing knowledge. If he had played in this midfield Wigan could of took on the best in the land.
CM – Wilson Palacios (2008 – 2009) Although his time was short, Wilson showed that he was a world class midfielder. Personally i think he played some of his better football at Wigan.
LM – Charles N’Zogbia (2009 – ) N’Zogbia has proven time and again that he is a quality player with goals at vital times and his never say die attitude shows week in week out.
ST – Jason Roberts (2004 – 2006) JR will always remain a fans favourite for his undoubted passion and commitment to the club. Roberts was a constant threat for many opposition in our first season and many of the Latics faithful would love to see him back at the DW.
ST – Hugo Rodallega (2009 – ) Hugo is part of the new crop to take Wigan to the next level. With new players coming in, Hugo can build on his last 18 months and become a Latics great.
Chris Kirkland (2006 – )
David Unsworth (2007)
Paul Scharner (2006 – )
Maynor Figueroa (2008 – )
Lee McCulloch (2001 – 2007)
Emile Heskey (2006 – 2009)
This team shows Wigan’s meteoric rise though the Premier League. There are players from our first season which led to a top 10 finish and a Carling Cup final appearance to players who kept us in the league over the years through to those who are taking the club forward. If this team played together under current manager Roberto Martinez then a top half finish would be almost certain. Furthermore the bench would provide more depth and the ability to change the approach to a game.
