This weekend sees the two lowest goal scorers in the league meet at the DW Stadium as Birmingham City meet Wigan Athletic in what must be classed as a must win game for Latics as we languish at the foot of the table.
The last two games have come and gone, along with the arguments that we should have been playing against ten men for large parts of both matches. We now have to focus and get behind the lads in the first of our next 9 Cup Finals.
We have a quarter of a season to turn it around and it starts against fellow strugglers and Carling Cup winners, Birmingham City. Neither team has really set the league on fire this season, and the main reason is the lack of goals.
Latics do however create a lot more chances than what Birmingham do and we can take heart from that and also from the fact that we have performed really well over the last 6 or 7 games without getting the rub of the green or the results we probably deserved.
City have had a dream run in the Carling Cup which saw them unlikely winners at Wembley, beating Arsenal 2-1 in the final and securing a European campaign whatever league they may be playing in.
Latics have been away to La Manga to put in some much needed intensive training for the run in, the two week break will hopefully have freshened the squad up and not made them a little rusty.
Roberto Martinez has no fresh injury worries and he will be looking to his team to pull out all the stops in this game to drag us back into the pack and give us a much needed lift. Three points would move us to within a point of our visitors and more importantly would probably get us off the bottom of the table.
Lee Probert will preside over what will be a morale boosting Latics win. The Gloucestershire referee has been in charge of 26 games this season, seeing us draw 2-2 against Arsenal and lose 2-0 against City plus he was in charge for Birmingham’s 4-1 win over Milwall.
He has dished out 63 yellow cards and 6 red cards; one of those reds was of course Charles N’Zogbia. Hopefully he will have a good game that allows us a few of those decisions that has been greatly lacking for us recently.
