Match Preview for visit of Ipswich Town

The return of Paul Cook to the DW Stadium isn’t in the form that Wigan Athletic fans wanted, as he brings his new club Ipswich Town to take on the Tics.

I personally would have loved for Cooky to have come back to us to start building a new team, like he did 4 years ago, in fact with a bookmaker you could have got decent odds. Only Administration in my view stopped him from putting a serious challenge of promotion to the Premier League this season.

The team that he had finally put together at the end of last season was almost the finished article, the results from the turn of the year were better than any other club in the country.

But as Administration took hold, Cook could no longer stand for the antics of this coven of administrators that thought they knew what they were doing. He was going to quit 2 weeks before the ned of the season but stayed on to try to keep us in the Championship even with the 12 point deduction.

Nearly a year on and we are fighting again to stay in this division, but with hardly any resources and the smallest squad in the league. It will be interesting to see how Leam squares up to his old gaffer.

In recent games Latics have recorded 7 points out of the last five, compared to Ipswich’s 4. WE are both 2 points away from our targets too, though they are at different ends of the table, us for getting out of the relegation zone, Town for getting into the play offs.

Wigan will likely see Proctor, Otabor, Massey and Keane take part at some point. Injuries have been a problem of late but some players are coming back at just the right time.

Referee is Andy Haines who has presided over us twice this season, both at home. He oversaw our 6-1 demolition of Liverpool in the cup, and the 3-2 loss to Wimbledon where he really did hand the result to the visitors.

Our head to head can’t separate us, with 6 wins apiece and 2 draws, though Ipswich has the upper hand a our stadium by 4 wins to 3, we need to level that up.

If we can get our key personnel back I can see us winning this game against an out of sorts Ipswich. Our new owners or at least the new CEO will probably be at the game so let’s see if we can show our intent for them too.

Remember all games are live on Latics TV, 70% of the money goes straight into the coffers, so even though we are not at the stadium we can help out.
