Wigan Athletic v Manchester United – Cockney Latic Match Preview

This Saturday sees the league leaders visit the DW Stadium and boy does Wigan Athletic need some points, Manchester United will want to keep clear at the top but they are in amongst some big games and their away form has been indifferent by their standards.

It will be five years ago to the day that we met Manchester United at the Millenium Stadium in our first ever major Cup Final in our first ever season in the Premier League. We thought it would be our only season in the top flight, but here we are playing Manchester United still.

Although we have got to hope that the result won’t be the same this weekend, we still have to remember that our visitors are top of the table and will want to keep it that way. We on the other hand will be high in confidence after our recent league form and will go into the game looking for the points.

The red devils are in a huge run of games themselves with playing in the Champions League, plus having Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal straight after us in the League; let’s see if there is any squad rotation going on.

United will be without Anderson for the game, whilst they could see a return of Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen and an old Latics favourite Antonio Valencia. Latics have no injury worries, but Tom Cleverley will not play due to him not being able to play against his home club.

There is no doubt that on our day we can compete with the big guns, we have shown this before now, but it is getting to the crunch now and points are needed whoever the opponents are. We haven’t won or drawn in 11 attempts in the league and so we are due something from Fergusson.

Mark Clattenburg will be in the limelight whilst officiating this game; he has already seen Man Utd win three home games in the League, plus a loss in the FA Cup. We have drawn one and won one under his eyes.
