Latics make the longest journey of the season down to a Portsmouth side that has just been slapped with a transfer ban this week due to them owing too much money to other Premier League Clubs.

Roberto Martinez has had a little on his mind this week with the Spanish papergate affair, but he has said that it has not detracted away from the team’s preparations for the game on Saturday. We have also had the loss of Marlon King, if you can call it a loss, now that he is serving an 18 month sentence and has been sacked.

Portsmouth are in all sorts of trouble on and off the pitch these days, the latest being a transfer ban until they pay up what they owe to other Football Clubs. This comes hot on the heels of a double buy out in the last 6 months, the last one being by a company that has openly admitted no interest in the club, but are just after making a fast profit on the club.

The team themselves are not faring too well, bottom of the Premier League with just one win to their name, although they did have a very impressive victory on Tuesday against Stoke, beating the Potters 4-1 and securing a quarter final date in the Carling Cup. Let’s hope they’ve got their scoring out of their system for this week hey.

Latics themselves are coming in on a bit of a high after beating Burnley 3-1 after going a goal down in the 4th minute, making us the first team to win at Turf Moor this season. Bobby should have another full squad to choose from with the exception of Maynor Figueroa who will be out for seven weeks. Scharner and Kirkland seem to have come through their respective injuries and have been training all week and will be available to play.

Latics have won the last two games against Pompey and our hosts haven’t won a point yet this season at home, so the stats give us an advantage. But as we all know stats mean nowt and it is how the team perform on the day that gets the result. If Latics play in the same way we have over recent matches we will definitely come away with something, although Pompey have proved on Tuesday that when the team clicks they can score, we should have more than enough to beat them.
