Wigan Athletic v Maribor
We have not scored a goal in 4 of our last 5 matches
We have no recognised striker
We have no Maloney
We are a lower half Championship side at present
We were battered by Zulte and scraped a drawMaribor are top of their league
Despite their reported poor form their last 3 games have been against the 2nd 3rd and 4th in the league, losing by the odd goal in 2 away matches and drawing the other at home. Previous to this they were going for a draw v Rubin at home until 2 90minute plus goals made the scoreline 2-5.
Maribor have the dreaded ‘new manager’ factor
Maribor have scored in 4 of their last 5 matches at least onceWigan are 8/13 to win this match, the draw 3/1 and Maribor to win 11/2
Flip that slightly and Rubin are 1/2 to beat Zulte with the away side 15/2.I hope I’m wrong, I really do but I can’t help feeling those odds are seriously wrong!
3 October 2013 at 2:57 pm #121820Well that has just cheered me up somewhat
3 October 2013 at 2:59 pm #121821I hope I’m wrong, I really do but I can’t help feeling those odds are seriously wrong!Yeah, I was thinking that. 11/2 Maribor is generous to say the least. I really hate to back against us but since there should be no sentiment in betting, some things are hard to ignore.
3 October 2013 at 4:34 pm #121825I’ll hazard a guess that the Slovenian league is not as strong as the Championship is?
Bookies don’t often get it wrong and as poor as our results have been of late i think we can still nick a win.
4 October 2013 at 2:47 am #121829On that performance tonight we are 3 or 4 leagues better than them. Of course we always make it hard for ourselves by not putting teams to bed, but 3-1 did flatter them.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!4 October 2013 at 3:02 am #121832Could have had ten, nearly ended up with a draw, what a save from Carson, good stuff all round. Little gripes macmanaman not really at it and then got injured
4 October 2013 at 3:21 am #121834Team starting to gel and unbeaten at home so far!
Carson and Jean the standouts tonight and it looks like we may have found a striker in young Powell so it all seems very positive before we play Rawverrrs on Sunday.4 October 2013 at 3:29 am #121835Wigan were infinitely better than Maribor individually and collectively. It was an entertaining evening but the game should have been settled before half time.
Did Wigan play well as a team? Not really. In the second half, Coyle was calling for more effort. But the team was trying – it just needs to direct its efforts in a clear direction.
It’s difficult to say what instructions Coyle gave them. Blackburn will be a greater test.
4 October 2013 at 3:38 am #121837A very good historic first win in europe.
Never ever thought i’d be typing such words as a wigan fan.
Yes it went a bit nervy when they pulled a goal back but we won.4 October 2013 at 3:58 am #121839Team starting to gel and unbeaten at home so far!
Carson and Jean the standouts tonight and it looks like we may have found a striker in young Powell so it all seems very positive before we play Rawverrrs on Sunday. Can’t disagree too much but Powell is wasted up front. Especially on his own. Given our squad/ injury situation I do understand the selection, but would love to see him play behind 2 strikers.
4 October 2013 at 3:59 am #121840Really enjoyed it tonight, real buzz around the ground.
Fair play to the Maribor fans they enjoyed themselves all 100 of them (if not the result
)hope they enjoyed their visit as we will over there….
Impressed with Powell. An inch away from a hat-trick…
With Kazan winning today as well we’ve a real chance of going through. Anything’s a bonus next 2 games with Kazan then it’s all to play for.
The club is being showcased in Europe; pick the best team we can to qualify. If we get to the Round of 32…well you never know what might happen ;)

I’d love us to play 2 strikers upfront together, won’t happen with this mon same as his predecessor.
Anyway great home win tonight an good all round performance by all the team.4 October 2013 at 9:22 am #121847What are two strikers?
Forgot what that means.
Swan Vestas football is finished.
Nobody plays with two strikers so we dont need to either. We need more midfielders surely. Only had seven on last night.4 October 2013 at 12:08 pm #121853Fair play to the Maribor fans?
Dont think so. Pure scum. About 50 smashed up parts of Town centre near Sams bar attacking our fans armed with baseball bats before match. Most got nicked but at least a few got what they deserved once they were split. Cant believe nobodys mentioned it!
4 October 2013 at 12:50 pm #121855I heard that they’d done some damage in the Pear Tree. Anyone shed any light?
