There was a fair old punch up going on outside the Pear Tree.
4 October 2013 at 1:03 pm #121857They had a do early doors at trying to smash Berkely Square with bottles and planks.
Not sure where they got there baseball bats from for the attack around Sams/Pear Tree, somebody mention our local Poles might have been involved.
Thing is with these foreign lads, they like to go in armed, faces covered, attack anyone and anything and rarely encounter any fightback, as the people they are attacking aren’t like that. Hopefully what bigroy says is true and some of them got filled in. There certainly wasn’t anyone in their away support in the ground that looked capable of causing trouble anyroad. As for the away match, it’s the lads that are there staying over in smaller numbers which will have to watch out for these type of attacks. When theres a thousand Wiganers on the day all together there’ll be nowt.

Yeah, because they’re all “foreign” aren’t they?
Poles and Slovenes have nothing in common besides vague similarities in the language in the same way that English and Norwegian are related. Why would “our local Poles” get involved?
4 October 2013 at 1:26 pm #121859Now now, don’t make me out to be a racist. I won’t have it.
To quote me directly I said in response to another poster.
“Not sure where they got there baseball bats from for the attack around Sams/Pear Tree, somebody mention our local Poles might have been involved.”My point being that I doubt they had travelled with the said baseball bats and certainly didn’t have them earlier at Berkley Square, nor do I know of a shop in Wigan that sells them, especially after 6pm. It wasn’t me who said it was the local Poles, it was somebody I spoke to at the match last night.
Now if you’d like to wind your neck in and I’ll accept your apology when it arrives.
4 October 2013 at 2:16 pm #121862And where have I accused you of anything? I am responding to the unknown somebody, whose comments you have seen fit to repeat without condemnation or comment.

UK based Slovenians perhaps, or they could have driven over and had the things hidden their cars?
A similar thing happened in Stoke when Hajduk Split played there a couple of seasons ago.
4 October 2013 at 2:42 pm #121866A quick twitter scouring has brought up that they had knives amonst other things and more than one mention of Polish involved. How someone would know the difference is beyond me.
Sorry to Polish I mean Garswood Latic for any offence caused FFS! Why jump on that defend all races/nationalities card at the first sign of any detremental remark? This was something I’d read prior to us playing them….

But it’s best not to repeat ignorant gossip.
I now understand the comparatively large police presence in the away end – about one to one – and all the police vans trying to get to the ground after the game.
You can see why some cities are wary of foreign football fans and treat them so harshly.

When you said Poles in your message, I initially thought you meant Poles as in a substitute to baseball bats!!

One for the older ones.

they brought fifty or so harmless looking fans so it was surprising to hear loads of sirens on a par with New York city before the game and to hear they caused so much trouble!
I suppose it highlights just how well behaved our supporters are both home and abroad and we should all be very proud of that!5 October 2013 at 12:29 am #121890Had a quick drink in pear tree earlier this evening. Didn’t see any damage and there was no mention of trouble
5 October 2013 at 7:35 pm #121933I heard that the trouble was nothing to do with visiting Slovenians – it was the return of the greenjackets.
Coming soon to a street near you!! :woohoo:
