Burton kept us well under wraps and totally deserved their win. Not pretty, not stylish and not good to watch but controlled the game. Well done to them and let’s move on. To move up from this league we have to break clubs down somehow. Some poor performances from some of our lads but they stopped us attacking. A bit like a non league club in the cup but their fitness levels were amazing.
25 November 2015 at 2:24 am #145924Fully agree, outplayed us all night, very quick and committed, closing us down high up the pitch.
Would have settled for the draw at HT and we may have got it had we not conceded from yet another of our own ballsed up corner routine!
Selection wrong tonight and he persevered with a clearly out of sorts Jacobs who I guess was feeling the effects of the injury that forced him off on Sat. Writing on the wall a bit given we scraped through the last two home games against opposition not nearly as good as tonight’s.
Junior changed the game for the better, but he should have been on from half time really, last 15/20 didn’t give him long enough.
25 November 2015 at 2:24 am #145925I will say it again our two centre midfielders are too square of each other and don’t fill the box when we go forward unlike Burton when they scored they had four in the box waiting for that goal
25 November 2015 at 2:40 am #145926The way Caldwell set up tonight was the same way he set up on Saturday that he scraped a win with. I thought it was in prep for tonight but it obviously wasn’t and we created next to nothing. To play this way at home is not right and we seem to have lost the momentum from Rochdale because of it but I have no idea why he’s sought to go this way. We’ve started tinkering again and not for the better.
In my opinion Davies and Grigg should not be on the bench with Ravell working his socks off on his tod, with little or no support from midfield.
Pretty annoying we hardly troubled the keeper on a wet night, far too much fannying around when a shot was on, some of the final balls/crosses were terrible.
I thought Burton were there for the taking and hardly impressed me.
More annoying is some of the teams around us that surprisingly dropped points tonight. We need an urgent review.
25 November 2015 at 2:42 am #145927That goal came from our stupid corner routine but we had two players near the half way line yet Burton could still manage the goal on the break.
25 November 2015 at 3:01 am #145928All fair assessments above (I must be ill)
Burton came to out-muscle and be in our faces – go away with a draw at least and maybe snatch a goal which they did.
No need to panic but we don’t have a good record against teams in the top half of the table, and perhaps were too complacent. Atrocious conditions – although as is often said it’s the same for both teams.
Had the chance to get a point near the end with two missed sitters, but being optimistic it’s a wake-up call. We know we can play better (the difference with last year was that we didn’t know that at all).
If we now go on another 9-10 gam erun I’ll forgive them this one.
25 November 2015 at 3:09 am #145929Worry is we have beaten one team in top twelve all season so far. How he can change team post Rochdale is beyond me. Also beyond me is how folk can suggest they outplayed us but perhaps I watched a different game.
25 November 2015 at 3:51 am #145930No one has said they outplayed us. They out muscled us, and were in our faces. We needed to break that down, and didn’t. The teams were pretty even but they did what they intended better than we did what we intended.
25 November 2015 at 4:39 am #145931Burton are a very average side with little creativity but they had an excellent game-plan and were extremely well drilled. They starved our creative players of the ball and exposed the frailties of Daniels, Chow and also Gary Caldwell.
I hope Gary will watch the recording of the match over again so that he can learn from the defeat and come up with a way to deal with well-drilled spoilers.
This match was a real test of Gary’s progress – He was against a top Manager and I feel he came off second best by quite a distance.
25 November 2015 at 11:41 am #145932At least Gary is not giving it the “we will take the positives” in the post match press. Maybe he has thrown away Bobby’s rose tinted spectacles.
Anyway, Southend on Saturday and we can expect more of the same from the opposition; especially with Phil Brown in charge ! Let’s hope Gary is a quick learner.
25 November 2015 at 11:59 am #145933Perfect away performance from them last night
25 November 2015 at 12:07 pm #145934Just hope we do better than last night. Maybe we could play to our strengths a little better. All along the right side was very weak last night.
What other options have we than playing Chow as a wing back or even James as a wing back with Wildshutt on the left. Two matches running the left side has looked cramped and the right side spacious. Oh and Donervons passing last night!!! My God it is a good job Burton came to spoil and not to attack or those mistakes in the first half would have cost us.
Don’t worry Al a draw at Southend and a scrappy win against Barnsley and we are back on course for a double Wembley trip.25 November 2015 at 12:20 pm #145935At least Gary is not giving it the “we will take the positives” in the post match press. Is that the Southend who scored 5 away last night? I doubt they’ll set up too worried about us, which is where we tend to fail.
Tempo, pass and move, whatever you want to call it, is our best way of playing. Everything feels like it’s in slow motion until we get an odd burst from Wildschut. Davies is a key man for me, reminds me of Jason Roberts, holds play, rolls his man, compliments the attacking line. Why he’s not starting is astounding but I think that about Pearce too, can’t see what these lads have done wrong. Grigg is probably just a goalscorer and not much else but he needs to be on the pitch to score those goals.
There’s lads I’d comfortably drop to get these players in the team.
As for their perfect performance, in result terms yes but we contributed more to it than them, we saw how the same team performed against Shrewsbury, to go with it again was just daft.

Fully agree, outplayed us all night, very quick and committed, closing us down high up the pitch.25 November 2015 at 12:52 pm #145937I’d agree with Donny’s Page that Burton were a horrible team to watch (reminded me a lot of Porto under Mourinho from years back) but I have rarely seen a team as well drilled as them.
They never let our midfield settle on the ball from start to finish, and rather than rise to the challenge the midfield seemed to withdraw. As soon as our defenders had the ball they were pressurised & that just led to so many rushed & misplaced passes & aimless hoofs up field.
When they relinquished the ball, even high up the pitch, they were so quick to get all bar one back behind the ball. They rarely let Wildschut get a run on them.
They also had a slight nasty streak to them but were clever with it too & quite regularly left a foot in just that little bit late to annoy the player they did it to but slyly enough to escape the attentions of the officials (McCann got caught with 2 off the same bloke in the first half in front of the liner who missed them both).
They were also, I think the term is “professional” when it came to slowing the game down with “injuries” when they were stretched a bit – the guy who went down clutching his head to get play stopped who then spent 2 minutes getting treated or something on his leg springs to mind, as does the guy who went down off the pitch in injury time when Latics got a late throw (forced the ref to stop the game to have a word with em both & any momentum had gone). It was awful to watch but it was very successful & the fact that they’ve scored so few & conceded so few indicates that it wasn’t just a special tactic to deal with Latics
