Without sounding too much like a happy clapper, at 0-0 he obviously felt we were on top and considering all the play was in their half he was probably right. As soon as they scored he made two changes (which he was making anyway) and changed it. We then had two/three glorious chances in stoppage time and blew them.
Judging from his comments, I’m not sure he did think that but IMO anyone that did was living in cloud cuckoo land.
Last night was one of those occasions where possession mean nothing coz until a couple of scrambled late, almost simultaneous efforts, the team created almost nothing all night. Burton were comfortable & if anything it was Latics would looked the most vulnerable when put under any sort of pressure.
If Caldwell’s game plan had been to get a 0-0 draw then you might have a point but I’m pretty certain that it wasn’t.
He’s said himself what the problems were (bar his original team selection) but last night he just seemed unaware what or reluctant to do about it
I’d have changed it after about 55 personally, but Gary must have seen something to have left it how he did for as long as he did.
26 November 2015 at 10:44 am #145955If we look at the season overall Latics are in a pretty good position considering the massive upheaval last summer. Like GC or loathe him as a player or rooky coach you have got to give him a lot of credit for the position we are in and at some stage happy clapper or not we must at some time give him the benefit of doubt for decisions made in individual matches. Yes over the last two games there are a couple of things that may to some seemed a little strange and in particular on Tuesday when things didn’t work out by the timing of changes , tactics and team selection etc it is all part of a season and on this occasion he and the side where out manoeuvred and bullied out of three points. The manager and side will learn from this and move on and keep learning.
On the subject of timing I and many others at one stage on Tuesday would have been satisfied with a point against that hard working side and good luck to them they are going to take points off a lot more clubs before the end of the season.26 November 2015 at 1:57 pm #145958I’d have changed it after about 55 personally, but Gary must have seen something to have left it how he did for as long as he did.Personally I’d have changed it at half time as there was just so much that wasn’t working, although maybe that was the problem for Caldwell – where to start!!
26 November 2015 at 5:05 pm #145959Burton are a very average side with little creativity but they had an excellent game-plan and were extremely well drilled. They starved our creative players of the ball and exposed the frailties of Daniels, Chow and also Gary Caldwell.
I hope Gary will watch the recording of the match over again so that he can learn from the defeat and come up with a way to deal with well-drilled spoilers.
This match was a real test of Gary’s progress – He was against a top Manager and I feel he came off second best by quite a distance.
Couldn’t agree more, JFH got his tactics spot on. GC got his wrong, and didn’t know how to turn it around, against a team with very average players.
That game was crying out for a change at 20minutes, was surprised there were no changes for the second half. The continual passing out from the back against a team who defended from the front was our biggest problem. We sat so deep in the first half, you’d see 15 passes before we even got to the half way line. It was evident players weren’t comfortable with the ball. Corners were terrible, Jacobs couldn’t beat the first man, so then we resorted to taking short ones??
Don’t think we deserved to lose, & Burton are not a team i’d like to see at the DW every week. GC needs a plan ‘B’ in his locker as if teams keep coming here with that mentality it could be a long season.
To be honest that’s what surprised me the most last night.
If Caldwell has impressed me anywhere it’s in his ability to see where things aren’t working & change it for the better – he’s done it at half time on numerous occasions so far.
Last night he surprised me by sticking with the exact same starting line up as the one which had laboured to a win against Shrewsbury on Saturday when it was clear that it didn’t work particularly well.
Then on top of that, when it was clearly struggling again against Burton it surprised me that he didn’t mix things up at the start of the second half & waited too long to make changes in the second half itself. So I think that he’s got plan B,s C’s & D’s, it was just for whatever reason he seemed reluctant to use those last night
It’s hard to be over-critical when the team hasn’t lost for so long but he got it wrong last night & I hope he’s done what he’s done before & learned from those mistakes
That is a good point and one that i have said myself. My comments were more based on the style of footy played (which i didn’t mention) sometimes you need to change your approach and not just the players. To see the keeper kick it long would have taken pressure of the defenders , the midfield to hit it over the top for us to run on to and put their defence under a bit of pressure. Nothing is guaranteed, but worth a go.
Was honestly expecting a good game of footy with Burton as they did (or so i thought) have a reputation of being a playing side, but instead parked the bus, cheated & time wasted!!27 November 2015 at 8:28 pm #145983I will say it again our two centre midfielders are too square of each other and don’t fill the box when we go forward unlike Burton when they scored they had four in the box waiting for that goal
I’m not really sure what offends you so much about Perkins, but I’ll give you your dues, you’re persistent with it.
Player of the season so far by a country mile
27 November 2015 at 9:03 pm #145990Jacobs for me and if mcann ever gets back in the midfield he would walk player of the season
27 November 2015 at 9:04 pm #145991Think you’ll find its Jacobs, Griff ;)
27 November 2015 at 9:04 pm #145992Great minds PSKL
27 November 2015 at 9:12 pm #145994I can assure you I haven’t got a great mind
27 November 2015 at 9:19 pm #145995Great minds PSKL :ohmy:Oh yeah, I must be wrong if you have a different opinion. I’d forgotten that’s how it works.
It’s still Perkins. Anyone who knows football will tell you that
27 November 2015 at 9:24 pm #145996I like to think I know a bit about football and like you say football is full of opinions.
28 November 2015 at 3:11 am #146001I will say it again our two centre midfielders are too square of each other and don’t fill the box when we go forward unlike Burton when they scored they had four in the box waiting for that goalI see what you are referring to PSKL about midfield, but if you look at Perkins as an individual player, then for me it’s hard to pick fault with him.
Quality in this league is defo scarce, but i thought he had a good game against Burton. Never stopped, like a little terrier in midfield and puts his body in front of the ball. Exactly what every team needs, IMOPS, CL main mon, any chance you can prevent key board warriors copying & pasting this comment?
