How do we all rate Cleverley at the moment and do you think he will make it into the United team and be a future England international?
I think he has a lot of quality and a good footballing brain. He also looks hungry to get involved and get stuck in. I think hes got a bright future ahead and will make it all the way in the game.
30 December 2010 at 5:44 pm #54191If he gets his chances at Utd then he has all the ability to be an England player. However, I fear he will not be given enough chances and will be sold to someone like Sunderland
30 December 2010 at 5:53 pm #54194The ball he put through to Rodallega, which he ultimately handballed, was distinctly Beckham-like.
I think he will get his chance eventually as there are a few midfielders who are going to be past their sell by dates in the next year or two.
30 December 2010 at 5:56 pm #54195Being a selfish Wiganer, I hope he doesn’t get a chance and moves permanently to the DW. But I think he will make it. My problem is where exactly should his main position be? I generally think just off the striker, but when you see the crosses he puts into the area, I feel like he could be an out and out winger.
30 December 2010 at 5:59 pm #54196I think he would be best ‘in the hole’ as he doesnt have the pace to be a winger unless he plays similar to Beckham although Utd seems to play 2 fast wide men at the moment

Going off forum posts regarding the amount of players at Latics that are better playing ‘in the hole’, we should just dig two big trenches either side of the half-way line and dump ’em all in.
Ha Ha!!

Technically brilliant….. but hes SLOW cant play on the wing… that is not his position.
31 December 2010 at 2:23 pm #54249Also as he’s very right footed, shouldn’t really be played on the left as it slows the attacks down while he cuts in all the time.
31 December 2010 at 8:15 pm #54278Looks like owd purple nose has given Bobby the thumbs up to keep the boy until May. great, great news that is. :P
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!31 December 2010 at 8:29 pm #54280Also as he’s very right footed, shouldn’t really be played on the left as it slows the attacks down while he cuts in all the time.Oh right yeah, because him being on the left when he put that cross in for Hugo didnt work at all. :?

Wage bill considerations might mean we could keep Cleverley.

Yes, it works sometimes, but in the main it slows the attacks down and doesn’t stretch, or get behind, the opposition defence – one of the reasons Zog gets so few assists is he’s always cutting in from the right on his left, across the central midfielders, closing off all the space. Yes, he’ll get the odd goal like this, as against Arsenal last season, but he won’t set many up.
I see the right footer on left and left footer on right as a fundamentally defensive tactic to close the space, and one of the reasons we’re one of the lowest scoring teams in all the divisions. I understand the theory but I find it dull.
2 January 2011 at 1:17 pm #54326Tom’s favourite position is as an attacking, LEFT sided midfield player. As he is playing now.
How do I know? Because he told me last week.
Tom met with Sir Alex Ferguson on Friday, and as it stands he is DEFINITELY here for the next 3 league games.
No final decision has been made on whether he will stay for the rest of the season or not, just yet. Tom will be meeting with Sir Alex again shortly to sort this out.Personally, I think he’s a cracking player and I hope we can keep him until May. I think this lad can be the ‘new Beckham’.
