Conor Sammon and Tom Cleverley are cup-tied and goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi is unable to face his parent club, although all three would be available for the next round should Latics progress.
Why would Cleverley be cup-tied, and why would this change in the next round? I can only assume that it’s because we’ve taken him for a second loan spell in the transfer window, after the first leg of this game, so he’s effectively a new squad member like Sammon.

I think it’s almost correct but – and well done, the good old, WEP – for all the wrong reasons.
Ali and Cleverley are not cup tied but can’t play because their loan sarrangement preclude them from appearing against their parent clubs.
Sammon is apparently ineligible because he signed after the original tie was played and cannot therefore play in the replay.
That is why Sammon would be able to play in the next round but the other two would not.

Simples – I think[/quote]
Cleverley, wouldn’t be playing against his parent club, surely it is because Man Utd are still in the Cup and don’t want him Cup tied in case he is called back, Ali would be able to play becasue if we go through his parent club won’t be involved anymore anyway.
Why on earth did I think Cleverly played for Bolton??? Another example of my obsession with the Trotters, I suppose?
But what I was really alluding to is that the loan arrangement doesn’t allow him to play in the cup. Same with Al Habsi, but as you say Jason, after tonight that won’t matter, one way or the other.
So why therefore would cleverly be able to play in the next round as manure are still in it.
I think it might be incorrect information as some newspapers said we signed him on loan again, which isnt right as i think we always had him till may, just with united having the option to recall him should they need. therefore maybe it is thought that when he was injured and went back to united to get fit he wasnt still loaned to us
I think it is because Cleverley’s loan restrictions prevented him from playing in cup competitions in case he was called back to United and so they wouldn’t want him to be cup-tied… now, for a replay, you can only play the same players that were eligible for inclusion in the matchday squad for the original tie, with the exception of players returning from injury… Cleverley wasn’t eligible first-time round because of his loan-restrictions, but such restrictions only apply up until the end of the January transfer window because as of this season, clubs can only recall loaned out players during transfer windows if a long-term loan deal is in place. So, Cleverley will be eligible for future cup ties because United can’t recall him anyway.
If you kept with that train of thought then I applaud you.
would have been good to see cleverly tonight, though i cant imagine ill get a good feed on the internet it will all be clogged up with bloody arsenal :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:
Correct me if im wrong as i have only skimmed over it. But surely the reason Sammon cant play should be the same for Daniel Sturridge yet i hear hes playing tonight?
