Give me a night like that anyday .”
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
I started watching football in the late 60s and 70s. Things like that were rife then.
It wasn’t exciting. It wasn’t glamorous. It was very scary. It was not a thrill. It was not enjoyable.
You would go to games watching out who was near you (no segregation then) and worrying whether you’d get home safely.
Give me soulless able-to-watch-the-match-safely every time.
My uncle used to follow United in the 60’s and 70’s. He’s told me tales of saving a Wolves fan who was getting a caining at Old Trafford, of getting spit, p*ss, and coins lobbed at him by Leeds fans.
I got hit by a coin at Forest a few years ago. Luckily I had a cap on. I was furious and was all for lobbing it back…….until my mate grabbed my arm and pointed out that the Police had the video camera on us. They KNEW it was going on, but did nothing.
I will say this now, if it heads that way again, trouble being rife, I’m stopping going. How can you take a 3 year old to the match, if it’s like that? Films like Football Factory, that actually INSPIRE teenagers into being like that, should be banned. There’s another out soon, ‘The Firm’. They don’t help.
