The speculation as to whether Paraguay defender Antolin Alcaraz is to join Wigan Athletic has been put to bed by the 28 year old’s confirmation that the deal was done and signed in May and Roberto Martinez seems to have played a blinder.

The central defender has hit the World headlines with his headed goal against World Cup holders Italy, earning his native Paraguay a draw. It said it was the most beautiful day of his life and he hopes Latics will see a lot more of what he can offer.

He said: “I have a good contract with Wigan; I’m glad I’m going to the Premier League, I talked to the coach Roberto Martinez and have a good feeling so I don’t doubt my choice now.”

Alcaraz revealed that Paraguay is confident of progressing to the second round with games against Slovakia and New Zealand still to come. I’m just happy for the team; I think we can do something in this group. This point is obviously very important.”
