After impressing Roberto Martinez over the last few months, Steve Gohouri has agreed a new two-year contract. There was some interest from other Premier League teams but it is Wigan Athletic that has secured the players siganture.

Steve Gohouri is a towering defender that has fitted in well at Latics; he even hopes that his recent performances will get him into Sven Goran Erikson’s Ivory Coast World Cup squad. He joined us as a free agent following his departure from Borussia Monchengladbach.

He said on the deal; “I love it here in England and in the Premier League; I want to thank the manager for giving me the chance to prove myself. Now I want to concentrate on staying fit and getting in the side on a regular basis next season and help to push the club to the next level.”

Roberto Martinez is proud to be able to tie up the powerful centre back, say in that he will be a great addition to the squad and that he is glad that he signed for us after a few high profile clubs had tried to sway him.

Bobby said: “Steve has impressed everyone at the club with his commitment, power and skill. He is desperate to prove himself at Wigan and I am delighted he has agreed to stay with us. He will add fantastic competition to the squad.”
