Wigan Athletic will once again have to try to break down another team wanting a draw this weekend as Wolverhampton Wanderers visit the DW Stadium. Roberto will want his team to find the way through and start scoring goals.
The visit of Wolves this weekend will be a true marker of where Roberto Martinez and Wigan Athletic are in this League this season. These are the teams we need results against and although we know the 10 man behind the ball tactics that will be on show from Mick McCarthy’s boys, we want to see Latics free flowing football reap dividends.
To be fair, we haven’t done too badly in the past against Wolves, only losing two games out of 8 league meetings. Revenge will be in Roberto Martinez’s mind as he’ll remember losing to them here last season when we really should have won by a cricket score.
We are still sweating on the fitness of Franco Di Santo who was lucky not to have had his ankle broken at the weekend at Birmingham. The rest of the squad including long term injured Gary Caldwell seems to be in contention for places in the first team.
Wolves will be without long term injured Guedioura who has a broken leg and Hunt is suffering from a fractured toe, Van Damme could return though, although it could be a game too soon.
Injuries will be at the front of Roberto’s mind as Mick McCarthy’s men have by far the worst foul record in the league so far this season and having players out is something we definitely don’t need. The good news is that they also have the worst number of attempts at goal, 43 shots in total.
Both the games last season were away wins, we were bloody unlucky to lose at our gaff last time and it is something we will want to put right this term. Making the DW Stadium a hard place to come, coupled with scoring goals and winning games will be the best marketing the football club could do.
Wigan really need to give a good show for this game, get the supporters back on side and grab some much needed points, the next four games will go a very long way in letting us know what type of season this is going to be – 2-0 Latics in my head…..
