The Youth team now has their new coach after Dave Watson was lured away to the Toon, ex Wigan Athletic player John Doolan didn’t need asking twice when he was given the opportunity to come back to the place he enjoyed playing with our current manager Roberto Martinez.

John Doolan’s career at Latics was a short one, but when asked to come back and coach the Youth, he didn’t need long to think. There is no contract yet, but he feels he can do enough to get the lads playing the right way and continue the success of recent years.
The official Club statement reads:
Former player John Doolan has been confirmed as the club’s new Under 18s coach – taking charge of the Wigan Athletic youth team on a day to day basis as from this morning following the departure of Dave Watson to Newcastle.

The 43 year-old Liverpudlian has a decade of coaching experience working at both Liverpool and Everton academies, where he has been involved at all ages, right up to Under 18s and Reserve team level.
As a player, Doolan signed for the club in 1992, going on to make 38 appearances, scoring five goals, including a spell in the same team with Roberto Martinez.

Doolan said: “I’m delighted to be back at the club and to be taking on what is a really exciting challenge.”

Martinez said: “John really impressed at interview, he has great passion for the game and terrific experience of coaching at youth level. He understands what our club is all about having played here and we welcome him on board.”
