Wigan played some gorgeous football last night. Perhaps that was the problem, they knew they were better than Yeovil and took victory for granted.
McEachran, Gomez and Powell are surely the most elegant midfield in the Championship. McManaman was running circles around the opposition. But, despite the award of the penalty, Wigan found it difficult to create scoring chances.
The referee was unpredictable, but I don’t know if that favoured either side.
Yeovil were outplayed but never gave in. Wigan’s defence had an unusual look without Barnett and McCann and then Perch after his collision with McManaman. The arrival of Tunnicliffe added a little more muscle, but increased the unfamiliarity among the defence too. Yeovil took full advantage.
Wigan sliced through the Yeovil defence to score – as they should have done long before. But Yeovil persevered to the very end to score the equaliser.
