A tremendous game at Springfield Park saw a flurry of goals as Latics run out 5-3 winners over Port Vale in 1979. Houghton scored a hatrick whilst Brownbill and Moore pitched in with the other two. The next day we travelled to Crewe Alexandra where we couldn’t repeat the previous days rout and left with just a 1-1 draw.
In 1998 Latics completed the double over Burnley by beating them emphatically 5-1 at Springfield Park; Lowe scored two goals with Warne, Kilford and Barlow with singles. We had already beaten our Lancashire neighbours 2-0 up at Turf Moor in the December.
