Just reading some article about the football fashions of 1980s and the gear everyone wore. From memory a good pair of trainers and jeans was the requisite but this picture showed lads wearing full Lacoste and Fila and all that stuff.
My memory is that this kind of gear at the time was far too expensive and wages back then so poor , few lads could have afforded it.Remember a lad coming in the pub and saying he had paid £80 for a Lacoste jumper which in today’s money would be nearly £300 !!!
I know this is a post is removed from Latics but it would be good if other posters share their memories of this interesting period that some of us on this board lived through .
Any memories , stories etc would be great .7 April 2020 at 2:22 pm #185971I remember big white tennis shoes at one point, couldn’t afford lacost but had a nice blue Lyle and Scott jumper and a not so nice red Pringle one!
7 April 2020 at 4:12 pm #185972Earrings, an 80s must and still got both mine in. Had to be both ears back then not the normal left ear only. On and addidas shirts in all shapes and designs.
7 April 2020 at 7:16 pm #185973Remember coming back from Spain early 80’s with a load of Lacoste gear ,slightly cheaper than home but pre kids then so had cash to spare. Adidas Forest Hills with the gold stripes. Away days was just t shirt,Jean’s,trainers, fags and cash….Peter Storm fold up jacket.
7 April 2020 at 7:27 pm #185974Remember Feb 1977 3 month before I left school ….hardly any lads had ears pierced so I decided to do it myself.Ice cubes in tea towel to supposedly numb lobe, set of varying size needles. Wasn’t pleasant but cock a hoop at school next day ,till I was sent home for refusing to remove sleeper. Dad went ape so that night I pierced other eventually doing 2 each lobe. .. what a rebel!! Next 2 years noticed more at football with em in…….Fashion at football some then…now just massively overpriced, low quality mass produced crap.
8 April 2020 at 8:39 pm #185979I remember playing Lincoln at Springfield, about twenty lads came in their end, pringles and fila, smart Jeans and trainers, all with wedge haircuts, looked smart, then some lads came in skin heads and green bomber jackets, the casuals looked nervous for some reason, they then jumped the wall and came on the pop side, they were wigan, went out and bought some clobber the next day, and had the wedge hair cut
9 April 2020 at 3:02 pm #185985Diamond pringles
Slazanger jumper (canary yellow)
Louis Jean’s
Adidas forest hills/grand slam
Trimm trab
Borg Elite trainers
Fila t shirts trackie tops
Lots of others
Fred Perry
Sergio Tacchini
EllesesAnd the classic
Belcher chain (one that didn’t make your neck green)
My favourite was my Levi jacket. It wasn’t what they’d class as a true casual wear but I never went away games without it
9 April 2020 at 4:15 pm #185986Trimming Trab and diamond Pringle……memory jogger.
10 April 2020 at 1:07 am #185989Scousers brought Lacoste into the country after playing St Etienne in the 70s. Funny how different firms wear different gear even to this today. Scousers wear Boss whilst Mancs love Armani for example. Pair of Lois cords and some Diadora Bjorn Borgs for me with a Kappa bubble jacket (in my dreams!).
11 April 2020 at 2:03 pm #185998Probably the most worn trainers were Samba’s, they were the workhorse trainer.
But the diamond pringle was the one thing I remember more than anything from that period.
12 April 2020 at 5:32 pm #186012I remember a factory in Blackburn that sold cheap kappa coats.
14 April 2020 at 11:44 am #186030Remember the bubble coats and later the Israeli jackets that people wore.
14 April 2020 at 1:41 pm #186031Remember one Friday night in the early nineties at Springfield playing Hereford United and one of theirs was dressed in full Skinhead regalia.
We nicknamed him Hufty the Time Warp Skinhead.
Why did we have a season of playing Friday nights?14 April 2020 at 2:40 pm #186032Why did we have a season of playing Friday nights?I remember the Friday night games. Was it the very early 90’s? I cant remember the reason for the night games. But Kenyon will have had something to do with it.
14 April 2020 at 4:08 pm #186033We beat Horwich with ten men that season and hammered Nob End on Friday night too.
