Abject performance ! I don’t want to hear excuses ,from now until the end of the the transfer window will tell us what our new owners are all about .The jury is well and truly out .
A 25,000 seater stadium with 5000 in is what’s on the horizon….today’s performance after the previous 2 piles of dogshit has league 2 written all over it.I dare anyone to find positives in that. I really feel for Maloney…..the purse string manager is to blame…..and ffs please don’t use that f££££££££ top out word “Sustainability “
Men against boys , could easily have been 5 or 6 bar Sam Tickle.
After seeing that I fear the worst for this season and beyond I really do.
Effort was there but overriding fact is they are simply not good enough for this division and without some investment in the team will sink fast.
Back to non league very soon with this policy I fear , worst team I have seen since the dark days of 1993-94 with Kenny Swain trying his best with very little.
Feel sorry for Maloney , not his fault.
The difference with Swain though was he at least tried to play attacking football, with two upfront. The players we had were very limited, but we did have a few bright spots as I recall. We demolished Crewe who were a decent team then, and we scored some really good goals. David McKearney was better than what we have now, as was Neill Rimmer. Pat Gavin and Neil Morton could be a threat upfront.
And of course then, our owners had real limitations, which isn’t the case now, it just seems that the “running the club sustainably” is being used as a smokescreen to not plough money in…and I’m talking sensibly. Stevie Wonder could see it needs a bit of money spending as we have sank miles behind our rivals.
But then again, any manager worth their salt would come out and say this. Paul Jewell said to Whelan when he came in and was met with a case of half arsed players that it needed “major surgery”, and Whelan backed him. I’m not saying our current players are half-arsed, I just don’t think they’re good enough in all honesty. I’m concerned that Maloney seems to think they’re good enough and that’s why I am really worried. The squad is nowhere near good enough, I’ve said this all Summer. We lost the best players in the squad, amd also a lot of experience so I thought that without some strong signings and a bit of money spent, we would struggle. I kept waiting and expected to hear “wigan have signed..” and some experience to come into the squad…a spine through the team to build around. But it never happened. A lot of these young players who have come in would only be fringe players if we had the right squad. Adeeko included.
I’m alarmed that Maloney thinks the squad is good enough, when myself who most would consider a ‘layman’ could see it wasn’t. I’ve watched football live for 40 years at all different levels from Non League to International level. I’ve watched the best, and the worst. So, I can see when it’s not good enough, and this squad is not good enough. It’s not the players fault, it’s upto the manager. He’s got cut a lot of slack due to his history with the club, but my own personal opinion is that he is not upto the job. The football he tries to play, is awful. The club is heading in one direction, and it’s not up.
Some of you will flip when I say this, and that’s fair enough. But the thought has actually gone through my mind a few times that perhaps we’d have been better doing a Bury and folding and then starting again in non league. The only trouble is, I’m not sure there would be enough energy among the various factions of our support to have got us up and running again. But the alternative is this what we have now, an owner who it is debatable if he has any real interest in us at all, and a manager in place who is just a puppet for the ownership who use his history with us keep it just ticking along.
Crowds are going to drop and drop the way things are going. As things stand, we are in serious danger of going down this season. And then what? Latics ‘relocated’ to Leigh Sports Village because its smaller? I could see that happening.
He’s not my type of manager. I like a bit of a gobshite manager, rather than a quiet, thoughtful one. I’d love a Warnock type manager. Show some passion and tell it as it is. Maloney repeats the same old bullshit and spin in his post matches…its already boring.
Something really has to change, and change very soon. People dreading the visit of the mighty Crawley Town on Saturday just shows how bad we are. One up front…is shite. Tippy tappy one paced football, is shite. Got back to basics, do the simple things correctly, and that will be a start. If not, a change needs to be made.
The thing is, a lot of teams have got wise to playing against “the Barca style”. City do well with it because they’ve got £100 million players playing for them. A monkey could manage them.
There’s nothing better than 2 up front and crosses whizzed across the box and finished off. Latics? I really think we are awful and even if we did bring a new guy in, he’s got a hell of a job to turn this bunch into something half decent. We let so many players go at the end of last season, and have now let Hughes go as well, we are so weak.
It doesn’t even have to be 442 we play. We could just play one winger and put 3 in the midfield, tighten it up. Even play a CDM…Scott Smith perhaps? Matt Smith and Thelo in front of him and then the two strikers up front as a L and R pairing…maybe one playing as a target man for the other playing off him. (Get Matthieu Smith in. He’s available, without a club)
Nothing makes me think Maloney will try any of this though.
Trouble with Maloney is he’s spent too much time playing under Martinez; who started this tippy tappy one up front nonsense.
He (Bobby) when he first arrived, was trying to play Champions League football, with Championship players, on a non-league pitch. Everyone except him could see it didn’t work.
Fast forward 15 years we’ve got his disciple trying to play Champions League football, with non-league players on a Championship pitch.
Verdict? Well the pitch is better than it was 15 years ago.
It’s early in the season for the cliches, but Saturday is already a must win game. Or at the very least, a much more attacking intent. Maloney will lose the crowd very soon otherwise. Sad, but inevitable without a change of direction.
And now that the cat is out of the bag regarding pitiful contract release thresholds, Plymouth are making a move for Tickle.
This club never learns.
Definitely a must win, must batter Crawley game on Saturday; otherwise the fans will walk (season ticket or no season ticket !).
I dont think we lost all our best players from last season.
Josh Magennis- Hugill’s done more for our cause in 3 games than he did in over 30.
Humphreys – was great at the beginning of the season then after being dropped for a discipline issue he spat his dummy out and wasn’t the same player
Charlie Wyke- again started well then went out of favour, hardly played.
Jordon Jones- I agree he was one of the positives from last season. He’s back of course for the time being.
Charlie Hughes -without doubt one of our best players but I like the look of Aimson and Carragher so will he be that badly missed.? Time will tell when the 3 centre halves get games under their belts.
Luke Chambers – another top performing player from last season, it was unbelievable when he came back.
Kelly Watts / Liam Morrison, I liked both of these players but Maloney apparently didn’t, overlooking them for long spells.
Tom Pearce – Another Nick Powell, the physios will miss him.
Liam Shaw – another I liked but was in and out more than our next door neighbours cat, also injury prone. Will the Fulham lad do a better job when he’s fit?
Martial Godo- thought he flattered to deceive. No doubt a top talent but the goals and assists columns don’t read that well.
We are missing an experienced midfield player but did we have one last season when we beat all but Barnsley in the top 6. ?
We still have the Chelsea winger and the Fulham midfielder when they get over their injuries so mapping it out like this, are we really in a far worse position, squad wise than last season.?
All the young lads have a season under their belts so should kick on this season.
An experienced tall awkward number 9 and a midfield general late 20’s with championship experience are a must, then its all down to SM to get them bloody playing!

Matthieu Smith announced his retirement this week, he had done well for Salford last season. I thought we may have brought him in. That Bodvarson who left Bolton was linked with us at one point I think.
Gary Madine is available without a club…I wouldn’t touch him. Known as “top shagger” at Bolton. Apparently had his haircut ONCE a week in the hotel hair salon. We can do without that type.
I’m amazed Humphreys hasn’t found a club. Has he cut off his nose to spite his face? Had he stuck with us and had one more solid season with us and scored a few, I bet he would have got a Championship move. It seems crazy.
We’ve long been linked with Adam Reach, midfielder from West Brom, formerly Sheff Wed.
Madine has joined Hartlepool , seems to have led a lively life but scored a good goal a couple of years ago in a very memorable game against Blackpool.
