What an incredible season we are having. I have been watching football since time immemorial and have never known a season like this. In the past we have either suffered or celebrated all season long but this season has had more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel. It certainly pays to keep your mouth shut on here because you could look a fool the very next game. Some of my innermost feelings this season have been as follows:

Bruce leaves: – Gutted but not suprised, thought he did a great job for us.

Bob’s appointment: – Happy he got the job but worried that he would not have the experience or the backing of the players.

Aston Villa game: – Amazed and delighted that I was wrong to worry .

Wolves game: – Dreadful, but I thought that the players may take a while to adapt to the new style of play.

Man Utd, Blackpool and Everton – Beginning to worry. I could see what Bob was trying to do but wondered whether we would have the time to come to grips with the new style of play and whether we actually had the players to play that way.

Chelsea game: – Absolutely ecstatic. On a real high and was convinced we had got to grips with the style of play and began dreaming of europe.

Tottenham game: – Completely and utterly embarrassed. I thank God that I was in Australia at the time and could just switch my mobile off. My heart goes out to the rest of you who couldn’t hide. In my darkest moments I wondered whether Bob had lost the dressing room and that we were doomed to relegation again.

Sunderland game: – At least we salvaged a little pride and could feel slightly better about ourselves.

Man Utd game: – After this game and the way we had capitulated in previous games, I started to fear the worst. The green shoots of early season appeared to have withered and the team had lost direction. It had become obvious that we had players in the squad who for varying reasons didn’t want to play for us and were merely sitting on their contracts. I hoped beyond hope that we could make one or two decent signings but thought they would be difficult to attract under the present circumstances.

Hull city – Great display by some of our fringe players. McCarthy was a revelation and showed he was ready for the big time. I was still worried about our survival though and didn’t get carried away.

Signings: – Not overly impressed with the names at first but, after further investigation I thought that they could turn out to be inspired signings.

Postponed matches – If there is a god then he proved his existence by giving us the breathing space to regroup. I suspected that if we had played during this period then we would have struggled to get points.

Wolves game – Battered them and looked really solid at the back in the process. Early days but the introduction of Caldwell and McCarthy seems to have given the team a bit of direction and determination.

Present view: – It is probably too soon to say it but i am now convinced that we will easily avoid relegation. I looked at the team on the pitch and then looked at the players on the bench and couldn’t believe the strength in depth we now have. It is amazing what the introduction of two or three good signings can do (I include McCarthy in this).

Summary: What a season we are having, what entertainment, what suspense, what controversy and all this for a pittance. There are several teams now obviously inferior to us so I can see us finishing a comfortable mid table.

    Cue egg-on-face !

PS To the negative posters on here I would like to define the “superfan”. It is easy to support a winning team but he is one who supports his team even when things are “pear shaped”; that is the time when support is needed most. Whingers do not have a monopoly on football knowledge; perhaps the superfan shares their concerns but realises that slagging off the team and referring to individuals as sh**e does little to improve performances. The superfan is someone who is there for the long haul and sees the bigger picture. He doesn’t want to see his team go the way of Portsmouth, Leeds, Southampton, West Ham, Liverpool and Manchester United. It is a disgrace that a team like Manchester United, with an income most teams can only dream of, is now going cap in hand to its supporters because it is bankrupt yet some people want us to follow their example.

                      Agree with all you say.

Regarding United, apparently the independent supporters group who want to get the Glazer family out of the club, are trying to get none other than ERIC CANTONA to spearhead their campaign. Among other things, a boycot of the AC Milan Champions League match is planned, to show the watching world that the fans are not happy, by staying away. The only problem is, with the return of Beckham, you can imagine that there are plenty of tarts in the Cheshire/London area who will want to go and ogle him all night.

As for Latics, well not just because of yesterdays win, but more the fact that I can see improvements in the players we are going after, I am really looking forward to the rest of the season. With a bit of luck thrown in, we could have a cup final, and an interesting finish to the season. I think ourselves and Everton may be hovering about just in the top 10.

                      You just never know…………..

While we’re all ‘back slappin’ here can I say good post to you too Mr Vat. Your observational expertise of the foreign game is as good as your improvement in diction and prose in your posts….well done sir.

And to Mr Owd just realised what a lucky escape you had with ‘That’ result in South London…..I almost wish I’d been in Ozzie when that game had been played as well – glad it’s behind us now.

Here’s looking to the future. ;)

I live in Australia. Believe me when I say “that” result in London didn’t go un-noticed by both my Australian and ex-pat mates.

No hiding place on that one I’m afraid !

I was praying that Sunderland shipped a couple more at Chelsea on Saturday.

It just so happens I was in Perth at the time – beautiful place. Any chance I could adopt you to get my citizenship?

PS Have you any connections at the Royal Perth Yacht Club for next time I’m there?
