When Martinez said he wants the right characters for the club, if his judgement is anything like his detail for tracking players we will make some pretty shrewd signings this window.
Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is happy seeing new signing Antolin Alcaraz going to the World Cup with Paraguay.
Martinez has revealed his acquisition of Alcaraz earlier this month was the culmination of a pursuit that began at the turn of the year.
He told the Wigan Observer: “It may have seemed like a very quick signing, but I can guarantee that is not the case.
“We had been chasing him for the best part of five months.
“I met Antolin back in February in Brussels, and I am convinced he is absolutely the right character for our football club.
“He is an established international centre-half, who can also play left-back, and he is very comfortable on the ball. Above all he brings a great defensive awareness, and he will ensure we have great defensive competition for places next season.”
Martinez expects the player to make his presence felt both on and off the field.
“Antolin will become the first Paraguayan to play for Wigan Athletic, and he is very aware of that,” he added.
“He is just starting to speak English, and it is important for him to come into the dressing room and be understood and be himself.
“He is 27, about to come into the best years of his career, and to convince a player of the stature of Antolin that his future lies at Wigan was a great achievement.
“I think he is going to have a massive role for his country at the World Cup, and it will be very interesting to follow from a Wigan point of view.”

Martinez has also said Wigan are very lucky to have someone of his ability at the club. We’ll see how long that lasts ….
