Skysports reporting that Sunderland are interested in Ali and added that his agent said he would welcome a move back to the Premiership.

Proof, if needed, that there is rag all loyalty in football.

Ali has been a fantastic keeper for us.

His shot stopping is some of the best I have seen in a latics shirt however his tendancy to knock it back in the direction of the opposition and his poor distribution means he is by no means an all round good keeper.

IMO If they want to pay £4-5M I will drive him up there myself.

Couple of million and Kieren Westwood would be a great deal for us. Never had a chance up there. Good keeper for The Premiership let alone The Championship. Hope Coyle is thinking the same.

I would say that, despite Coyle’s claims the other day that he never wanted to sell Al Habsi, that he doesn’t think he’s that good a keeper. If he’d really rated him then there’s no way that he’d have been 3rd choice at Bolton behind Bogdan & Jaskelinen

I like Al Habsi & would hope that his dip in form last season was down to the hip injury he had, & I’m not the biggest fan of Scott Carson from his time in England but he’s competent enough in my opinion especially at Championship level so I wouldn’t be unhappy if he was at Latics.
If Coyle can extort as much money out of Sunderland as he did out of Latics when at Bolton for his 3rd choice keeper & picks up Carson for the rumoured 400k I’d say that was a decent bit of business

Right my turn to be pernickety…

I dont think Coyle thinks Ali is not “that good a keeper” otherwise he would of got shut at at a lot less than the £4million he pulled out of Whelan’s kung fu grip.

Why do you assume he would be ahead of Bogdan or Jaskelianen if Coyle thought he was “that good a keeper”?

Despite being king of the ginge Bogdan was player of the year at Bolton for 2012 so its fair to assume he did something right.

And I think Jaaskelainen speaks for himself in terms of being a premier league approved goalkeeper.

So I refute your claims that there could be no way Ali was third choice at Bolton as he had 2 very capable GK’s in front of him.

      Manager

There is no doubt Ali has probably been the best keeper we have had, but is he any better than Scott Carson??
I don’t think there is much in it.

Carson has made one or two glaring mistakes, but they were few and far between and in high profile games so everyone saw them. Overall he has been a decent keeper, and would be perfectly adequate in the Championship.

Ali has also made plenty mistakes in his time at Wigan, but we don’t remember or make a fuss about them, as he was ours so we let him off, a bit like RM and his plentiful mistakes as a manager.

If we can re-coup as much or a few quid more than we paid for him and bring in someone with the quality of Scott Carson for peanuts then that will be alright by me.

Pollitt and the young keeper are good enough in my view as cover in the Championship.
