There’s a “real ale” lager I’ve bought when I’ve been in Aberystwyth over the last couple of years called “Ewes Frolic” which I like – it’s brewed by Penlon Cottage Brewery & I think they only sell it at local markets & organic shops as I can’t find it anywhere else even online. They do other ales & stouts too but I haven’t tried any of them

There is also somet I bought a few years back in a real ale/whisky shop in Stamford Bridge (the 1066 one & not chelsea’s ground) called Fraoch which is a traditional Scottish Heather ales. Sounds minging but it’s reet nice & I’ve started to see it in a few supermarkets & have been able to supp it again
I bought another one that day though called Skullsplitter which was in a small bottle. It was very aptly named coz I could feel a hangover kicking in as I was suppin it (apparently it’s named after some Viking warrior who had a base on the Orkneys

The lager in Prague is quality stuff & they take a real pride in it & in letting you know all about it on the menu’s in bars with info about the altitude (or what I think was altitude) etc.. it’s brewed at – not that I had a feckin clue what that all meant but I’m led to believe it does make a difference to the taste

First time I went to Prague was in 2001 and I was paying 19p for a beer. Seriously.

Krakow is still good for a beer as well.

I brought some bottles back from York and one is a German Pilsner called Flensburger Pilsener. Its very nice.

….Has anybody tried it? If so, what’s it like? Any good?

Off to York next week and I’ve found some amazing places with good beers and ales on the pump and in bottle. I’m hoping to try some of the above as well as other types as well.

Not for me this gas-filled shite they call lager.

Only places I drink Lager are Czech Republic, Poland, or Germany. That’s NOT lager they serve here. It’s shite.

We have things in common! :)

The Czechs certainly know how to drink. I remember being in a little bar just across from the stadium in Liege in 2000 for the Euro game Czech Republic v Denmark. The bar was full of Czechs, and the bar was charging 200 Belgian francs a bottle (about £5).

The Czechs refused to pay that, but just stayed in the bar, filling the place but not buying anything. There was a standoff for about 20 minutes until the landlady chalked the price of beer down to 100 BFr. The bar more than made up their money in the next hour :)

        People power at its best.

I remember being in Prague, it was 9am and there was two workmen working up ladders. They were sat having a break…..drinking big bottles of beer! At 9am!

The fact that I was paying 19p for a beer (in the cavernous club that was used in the Vin Diesel film ‘XXX’) absolutely blew my mind. It was Pilsner Urquell I think and the place was rammed but a hell of a good night.
I have to admit, I was well oiled by the end of the night, and to this day I have no idea how I got back to my hotel. All I remember is being with a load of Swedish and Danish lads, staggering across Charles Bridge at 3am….nothing after that.

My big tip to anybody (lads/blokes) in their teens and early 20’s who are single and fancy free is to do a bit of travelling and sample some culture, before marriages, mortgages, nappies, divorces and the CSA (not necesserily in that order) come into the equation.
