Just read that Charlie Hughes could be sold !

One minute the message is that we are going to have to make do with our up and coming young bloods and in the next breath “oh, we might have to sell the better ones”. So the vultures are now circling for prize pickings at pocket money prices. This is going to test my resolve. Maybe, we are going to make up the weekly team selection from the Speccies

Def bad bad news if he gets sold. I can understand Pearce or Lang simply because they’ve only a year left and their both that bit older so they’ve abit more experience and you know what their about but Hughes could be absolutely anything, you only need look at Maguire.

In 3-4 years he could be a regular in a Prem side who knows. We could really do with him staying put so it’s us who get that huge windfall in a few years but now is far far too early that’s unless it’s £5million plus.

I’m hoping and I bet the club are Robinson moves on from Fulham in the summer that sell on money is desperately needed

If they are investing an eight figure sum surely they don’t need to sell Hughes just yet. Would be better keeping him at least another season.

For me it’s all about the amount we’d get if sold. If we’re talking millions say £4million+ with a sell-ons say 20% then I’ve no issues with him leaving.

It would be nice to keep him but if he does get sold say to decent biggish club then it wouldn’t be fair on the lad keeping here in this sinking ship were he’d learn nothing in L1 next season bar how to hoof.

If we were in the Championship I’d say another season or two but not now. That money might be the difference between us staying afloat or dissapearing forever its that serious right now.

You’d think the “Bahraini Binmen” (our owners) would dig into their so called stinking rich coffers and stabilise the club but I don’t think their worth 30bob between them.
I keep hearing people saying Jasmi is loaded investment owners and companies invest other people’s not their own probably because he’s not as rich as he would like people to think

I can’t see us playing hoof next season with Maloney in charge.

I’m not so sure, it will be the quality of player we bring in that will determine the style of play so asking average or young players to play it out from the back one touch football might not be our best option or even possible. Remember Martinez early days ? Part2 due

With a non league side budget and the vast majority of the players gone then throw in the 8 points deduction I just cannot see us attracting any decent players willing to play for peanuts.

Next season will be super hard not only for Maloney but for us fans. It will be more of a head in hands season rather than a nail biting season.

All’s I can say is, next season ain’t gonna be pretty

The business model outlined by Talal was to have a clear pathway for young players from development squad to first team. Filter the better players into the first team squad and hopefully they will develop into good pros. That will allow them to be a “sellable” asset and keep the club financially sustainable. Charlie Hughes looks like being the first of these and whilst I’d love to see him develop further at Wigan, good luck to the lad if he can get a contract at a championship club or better still a premier league club. Who knows we might get a good few million for him and possibly keep him on loan next season.
We need to understand as fans that this is the new Wigan Athletic and whilst it may not see us back in the EPL again, we will hopefully have a club to support for the long term.

As I’ve understood it, this was the model under Paul Cook and the last owners. We were just at a point of being profitable and sustainable before they did what they did.

I live in hope we can get back there again but after 3PL backing out it’s not likely now.

It’s a difficult one with youth players, at what point do you sell them ?. If say we have a young prospect with a handful of appearances and we sell him although that benefits the club financially is doesn’t benefit us on the pitch which for me has to be the priority it’s like been stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Personally we have to bring the young lads though and play them then if the the right offer comes in (but only then) sell.

Hughes has a lot of learning but right now we have no choice to sell him if the right price is met.

What we need to is snap up some of these younger lads when (like Hughes) the likes of City, Utd, Liverpool, Everton etc release their young players.

We have to stop saying their not ready start playing them. Would Hughes be on the radar if Toure hadn’t of given him his chance ?, I doubt it. Cook would never have played in a million years, well not till he was at least 30

Exactly, the young lad Ethan Mitchell is the next Charlie Hughes and should feature sooner rather than later. Will the youngsters make mistakes?, course they will, but I would sooner see them making mistakes and learning from them than seasoned pros like Tilt and Power making them games after game.

Totally agree, we’ve been down the 30+ year old player for far too long and milked for cash along the way paying injured players.
Cook would rarely trusted any of the younger lads always preferring experience over youth and hunger.
And of course they might struggle but the more minutes they get the more experience they’ll gain along with strength side of the game.
This is about the first time since been been out the Prem were actually going to give them a chance (well bar while in admin).

Although these young lads don’t have the experience what they certainly won’t lack over the older guys is hunger, desire, and the want to achieve in the game.
If Hughes does get a decent move this can only spur on all our youth players especially those who played along side Hughes.

Yes Cooky did nothing but praise Joffy and at the same time failed to play him.
When people were hoping he’d come to us on loan it really would have been a big gamble. The lad had done nothing at first team level both at Wigan or Leeds apart from the odd Cameo.
I’m really excited about seeing the likes of Tickle, Chentouf, Sharif, Smith, Brennan, Sze, Mitchell and Adeeko in the first team. The lad who was on trial from Burnley at LB looked a decent player too.
