My dad took me to watch the Latics play at Springfield Park when I was a very small boy and despite being wooed by the might of Old Trafford in the late sixties my heart is and always has been with my home team.
My many match memories include FA cup games against Manchester City (1971); Mansfield Town (1974) when we were lucky to survive the snow over the Cat and Fiddle; and Everton (1980).
I also went to watch their very first game against Hull City when they were promoted to the Football League (back then) the Fourth Division.I moved away in 1984 but the club dropped me from email updates because (I assume) I have never been to the DW and I don’t live near Wigan. That hurt!
10 February 2018 at 1:12 am #166154Now I have the above statement off my chest.

You may want to edit ‘Hull City’ and ‘promoted’ bits.
10 February 2018 at 1:27 am #166159Why? Please enlighten me.
10 February 2018 at 1:42 am #166160“Established in 1932, the club would establish itself as a big name in non-league football over the forthcoming 46 years, claiming four Cheshire League and Lancashire Combination titles, as well as two Northern Premier League honours shortly before their election to the Football League in 1978.”
That is when Southport were dropped from the fourth Division and were replaced by Wigan Athletic.
The first game Wigan ever played in that league was against Hull City and they lost 4-0. I was there and I would stake my life on it.
