If today’s game against Orient wasn’t proof that we need a forward then I don’t know how much more convincing Danson needs.

Caldwell needs funds, for Christ sake give him at least the Gelhardt money and let him bring someone in.

We had 2 glorious balls go in the box within a minute of each other in that second half and no one clever enough to get in front of their man.

Without Taylor last season we would have gone down. And the last 2 performances we’ve wasted some very good chances and this year no Taylor.

I truly fear for us because if we can’t put away golden chances then it doesn’t matter how creative we are behind any striker.

I think Mellish found his level last year in L2 because after I said he should come back I understand why he was sent out on loan,

      He’s a car crash player.

I just hope Caldwell can find a forward in the next week or so because if he doesn’t, mark my words it’s gonna be a shit Christmas languishing near the bottom

It’s same old same old. We’ll persevere with Costelloe and Perkins and then Saydee will come in and they’ll continue to be shit. Sze played his 50th game today!!!

FFS try someone else from the bench for a change. Give Moseley a chance to put the ball in the net

          Can’t disagree.

I was actually shocked by how bad we were today. I mean, REALLY shocked.

Bar Reggie Smith and maybe Akeel Higgins, I thought we were awful. Not including the subs in that.

We couldn’t work out our formation and how we were set up, it was all over the place. To be quite honest, it was a mess.

Carry on like that and we will emulate Port Vale from last season. Bottom 3 all season and relegation. And they said there was over 9k on? No chance. Nowhere near. And if we don’t pick up, it’ll get even worse.

Shambles. And Caldwell said he is “Pleased with the performance?”   I know some have said he is all part of this with the ownership. Ive never agreed. But when he’s coming out with that…you have to wonder.

I already wish I hadnt renewed. It’ll be last time if this continues. It’s dreadful.

Playing Costelloe on the right to accommodate Perkins is hanging the lad out to dry .He’s done his best work through the middle. Who the hell scouted Perkins???…….Not strong enough….I’d go as far to say bone idle. Him,Costelloe, Saydee,Sze…….not 10 goals in em combined!!!……Orient sold Ballard 5 mill……straight away bought 2 strikers. Take note Gary……theirs were energetic, physical and combined well with each other. Burn,Power, young Walsh did well……Mellish a car crash, Carragher looking in decline.  16 shots,2 on target……..what can Caldwell do if its one in,one out before he can add more, particularly with zero funds. Danson has totally screwed us if its the loan market and cheap fixes……..where’s the Geldhardt,Tickle,Devine funds ? A couple of strikers is an absolute must or the 6000 average gate is on the soon to be horizon……….same problem as last season.Taylor was the cavalry……………Jayden Wareham could be this season if Exeter accept us clubbing together our Oyster,Tesco club points as a deposit.

The difference was highlighted when Costelloe went through 1 in 1.

Rather than take it down he tried to lob the keeper from the edge of the box.

Most decent forwards understand distance and ball up & down travel, the closer you are the harder it gets to lob a keeper.

He had the chance to drag it away from the defender then shoot, and that’s the difference between a Joe Taylor Will Grigg to a Costelloe

Decision making at that crucial final attempt.

Costelloe then had another through ball and decided to aim high and missed the goal when low & hard would have been a far better option.

I had this vision that Taylor would have dragged it left then shot for the first Costelloe attempt chance and low and hard for the other.

              But for me

              Defending was abysmal.

              For there first, Christ almighty!!

A simple lob back in to the far post, nod back down unmarked man literally screaming for it on the pen spot. Unbelievably so easy for them.

              Then for their 2nd,

Mellish needs absolutely roasting for that. Wtf was he doing coming all the way over from the left to right then does that?.

              But for me, Power

Power comes bombing back far far too late. He stood, watched Mellish drop a bollock then reacted far too late. The goal scorer literally waltzed into the box and not even at the last second, although it was Mellish’s fault Power should read that and track back.

I see Cze was me ruined above omg I’m in disbelief, fact coming your way

Cze has only made 3 more starts more than Sony Perkins in his career for us.

In his 33 league appearances (bollocks to any tin pot kids cup games) 28 have come from the bench.

The only way you can improve is to play. Call him all you want but over a season if Cze started and played 23 and Perkins 23 I’d back Cze all day long.

Is he the answer ? Probably not but he’s a far far better option the Perkins who is totally out his depth, I wouldn’t even say he’s non league he’s that bad.

I thought Harris looked very good. He reminded me of Wright the way he ran and his energy a future must starter.

But regardless the issue right now is not the attack for me it’s that back line. It’s an absolute total utter disaster. Mellish needs to go, I argued for him to come back after he helped MK to promotion but Jesus Christ he is bad.

We now sit bottom of the table, the only side without a point. Yes it’s early days I get that but it’s all about confidence, building confidence within a side and a happy changing room.

Once that negativity gets in it’s very hard to undo it. The first and formost job for Caldwell to form a partnership at the back.

And no Millar even for last 10 ?. Based on his performance the week before and how he influenced the game I was taken back.

              Id go 4 – 5 – 1 this 3 is killing us already

You’re right about 3 at the back. Caldwell as obsessed with it as Lowe. No change ever to a back 4 even when the game is drifting. I’d like to see a spell of Murray actually playing as a winger rather than a wing back

Mellish and Fox to go and free up wages. I think Carra will go before the end of the window as they’ll want a fee for him since it’s his final year

When its not going right, sometimes you have to go back to basics and strip it all back. We need to do this and go to a 4-2-3-1. This has become a really popular formation with clubs all over.

                  A solid back 4…

                  Barrett, Carragher, Burns, Fox/A. Harris.

                  2 Holding Midfielders….

                  Power, Weir/Gray

                  3 Attacking Midfielders…

Murray, L. Harris, R. Walsh, Higgins.

Walsh playing as a CAM in an attacking ‘pivot’, behind a front man. Given a free roam. He looks class and should be allowed to play make.

                  1 Frontman…

We haven’t really got the man for this at the moment. The best we’ve got currently, is Costelloe. Perkins and Sze are neither good enough, or strong enough for that ‘Spearhead’ role. I think Saydee could be. But Id say we definitely need someone who is sharp, or even quite a bit physical up top. To both be a threat and also hold the ball up.

If the 4-2-3-1 wasn’t working, we could then switch to 4-4-2, 4-5-1, or a narrow 4-3-3 with attacking fullback. If we were 2 nil up away from home, we could also go to 5-4-1 to see a game out.

But our base formation needs to be 4-2-3-1. A back 3 failed last season and it will fail this season. I just dont think we know how to play with wingbacks. Incidentally, I see a lot of promise in Connor Barrett and Archie Harris. But we need a solid backline of a central pairing. Far too open and too much space in between a back 3. Bolton sussed us last season, and that was the point our wheels came off. Far too much room in behind the back 3. And Murray on the left is daft as well. We’ve dropped a clanger letting Hungbo go out on loan. Mistake that.

A back three yesterday had Mellish who is a midfielder but the problem like last season is playing with makeshift wing backs. Murray is primarily a right wing man not a left wing back. Weir is just Weir a midfielder who gives us nothing even in midfield. Costello needs a strike partner so let’s get him one and drop the one up top nonsense now and forever. Never has there been a more appropriate time to switch to a traditional Latics formation for goals, entertainment and success of 4-4-2. Bollocks to all the fancy formations but even more bollocks to playing players out of position. Square pegs in round holes never works so pull your socks up Caldwell youve had months to sort a squad and bring in players to fit your system so why the piss farting about? We have dawdled around in the close season so much it feels like we are in pre season still but minus Sam, Kerr, Wright and Taylor.

We.are definitely weaker than last season, in so many ways.

Lost our keeper, who saved us many times.

                      Player of year has gone.

                      Top scorer has gone.

We are in massive trouble, I think.

442? Concensus of modern coaches is that it isn’t flexible enough. Because they like changing whether we are in possession or out of possession. Its something Pep brought into our game, so did Mourinho and Rafa Benitez. Changing formations so a back 3 can become a back 5, which can then revert to a 3 when we are attacking. Wingbacks that drop in as fullbacks. When we havent got possession. Nobody goes for 442 these days. There’s a belief you will be overran in midfield as well.

I would much prefer 2 up front. But then I am a fan of plenty of balls into the box. Our delivery would have to be much better. We never even tested a rookie keeper yesterday. The more bodies in the box, the more balls in, the more chances you will get.

But as Ive explained, modern coaches dont like 442.

I will be very concerned if we get to Stockport at home and we still haven’t got any points on the board. Very concerned indeed.

You’re not wrong VAT. Even at this stage of the season, next Sunday has do not lose written all over it.

With the fixtures we’ve got in September, we could easily be cast adrift at the bottom come the end of September.

BUT, let’s not be all gloom. Whilst there’s only us lost 2 out of 2, there’s only 1 (Bradford) won 2 out of 2. Early days obviously but does suggest the table may be more compacted than usual this season, so a couple of wins could shoot us up the table. Here’s hoping. UTT

Key point I missed out when I put all the above about formations, was…

With 4-2-3-1 it gives you what they call the ‘Double Pivot’. That’s the 2 holding midfielders inbetween the back 4 and the attacking midfielders. It definitely tightens things up and gives the back line that little bit more cover. Its what a lot of top teams are doing now, that formation.

3 at the back just doesn’t work for us. Failed for Lowe, and its failing for Caldwell also.

Taylor hits 2 late on……….if only !!!….Perkins has a lot to live up to being that Caldwell nailed his colours to the master about him. Personally I can’t see it……..as always I’m happy to be proven wrong.  I go as far to say if we don’t sign a decent striker ( forget other positions)before Wednesday then a relegation battle is highly likely. This goal shy forward line is as bad as it gets.

Jayden Wareham not in Exeter squad today….not injured. Allegedly Wycombe made a bid as club admit they wouldn’t stop him for right price. Wycombe bid alerted Leicester  and Luton. Considering Caldwell managed him i had hope but without any money then we’ll be scouring Wigan Ammy league!!!

Taylor is light years ahead of any of our strikers. His 1st yesterday 1 touch then bang. 2nd great ball,1st touch takes him in on goal then brought down. That’s the difference……hits ball early, great 1st touch and already made his mind up. Ours need 3 touches, and don’t seem to be sure what to do next ie Costelloe’s chip last Saturday. I hope Perkins comes good(starting today )because I can’t see Costelloe ever being a regular scorer. I don’t think its something you can coach a player it’s a natural instinct……..Taylor has it ,Costelloe, Sze,Saydee don’t and on stats alone doesn’t seem Perkins has it either.
