Is it just me or does anybody else feel like we have lost that trait that made the club and made the Wigan Athletic story.When I first started to support the club as a kid I always dreamed of seeing the team play at Wembley.Luckily only 3 seasons later we made it to the F A Trophy final.Then my dream was to see us gain football league status and again the club fulfilled my dream in 1978.The dream then was to reach a cup final coz lets face it we were never ever going to play in the top division were we?.Little did I know that after a few barren times Mr Whelan would eventually buy the club and perform the ultimate miracle.The club has always come good for the fans and has given us the most amazing story in modern day football.Even in the days of struggle we found a way to overcome all diversities thanks to hard graft and organisation from people who worked their asses off to keep the story alive.We have been built on pride, passion and the ability to defy the odds time and time again and never once have the club let us down.Not many fans have witnessed the success i have only other Latics fans and the old Wimbledon fc fans have been lucky enough to see the rise from non-league to top league.I feel priveledged and honoured to have been a fan through these amazing times and will continue to be fan for life.I just feel that after the first season in the Premier League we seem to have lost that something special that drove us forward as though we have done it and reached the top.Its like all goals have been reached so theres nothing left to achieve.Obviously being in the league of greed we will never be up with the big boys and will always find it hard to compete.I believe that this will be a season too far and dont see any scenario other than relegation which will be sad but inevitable.Mr Whelan may come in for a lot of flack from some quarters but if we do go he will make sure we go in a healthy position.My hope for the future would then be to see us return to being the club we all know we all love and lets get back to Being Wigan Athletic.

i only started watching in about 95 as a nipper but i understand where you coming from, we are the favourites to go down every year but we still defy the odds i think this is very wigan athletic its just we have differant goals now.over the last ten or so games last year the feel good factor came back and i think it will this year to. i believe we will scrape it through again this year but it cant go on forever

I’d love us to stay in the top division playing good football and not start every single season knowing it’s going to be a relegation fight. Of course, if we were playing good football consistently, we wouldn’t always be in a relegation fight.

To be honest Griff i think Mr Whelan will ensure that its not at any cost.Relegation will be awfull but we know we will be in good shape at least off the field.Its so stacked against clubs like ours the Prem and im sure if they had their way they would hand pick the clubs they wanted to play in it.
15 January 2012 at 7:51 pm #78234Correct again, that man !Good times eh,I still see old Ralph occasionally, he drinks in the Springfield in Coppull.Now he was a character marrer
15 January 2012 at 11:47 pm #78261I love the club regardless of division and will still be there if as is likely we are in the championship next season.Being in the top flight has been brilliant for the club and its profile and will stand us in good stead foe years to come.Whelan deserves great credit for taking the club so far especially with his modest wealth in comparison to other PL owners!
It would be great to stay up again but i just cant see it and i would be disgusted if so called fans desert the club in droves just because we have slipped down a division.
A football club is for life end of!

16 January 2012 at 12:02 am #78264Being Wigan athletic -Our fans are surely the noisiest and biggest p’ss takers in the league.I watched the Swansea(new media darlings-for now anyway!) game this afternoon and it looked like a church congregation.
I am just going to enjoy the rest of the season and hope we can cause an upset tomorrow!16 January 2012 at 12:21 am #78267How do Ste;
As me and HORC were discussing on’t way home after the Sunderland debacle; Wigan are probably the most successful “little club” in recent footballing history ( last forty years or so ) and we have enjoyed every fooking minute of it. If we do go down; well it’s another chapter in our exciting history and we will still continue to upset the footballing odds somewhere !
C’Mon the Tics !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
