Just watched la Ligas finest slaughter and completely outclass one of the Premier leagues ‘finest’ -light years away in ability end of!
7 April 2010 at 1:37 am #28857It’s only one (two) game/s though, 6-3 on agg, Chelsea beat Villa 7-1 the other day and we can beat Chelsea, I think over recent years the Premier League has the best record of reaching finals or semi’s, I wouldn’t write the Prem off just yet.
7 April 2010 at 2:00 am #28865Its not as though the Premier League is an English thing though is it !! It is littered with all manner of foreign players ! On saying that La Liga is a bit like the SPL ! The team in 4th spot is nearer to relegation (points wise) than the top of the league !! Messi is like I say a one in a million player pure unadulterated class !
7 April 2010 at 2:13 am #28870I think our league has the better strength in depth than the Spanish league, but at the very top, the Spanish league probably has the edge. Ironically, if it hadn’t been for an inspirational display by a Spanish goalkeeper, Barcelona would have been at least 6 up at half time in the first leg
7 April 2010 at 11:17 am #28885You will find the spanish league will have the upper edge on the premier league as the influx of south americans, only the ones we let go obviously, and top class south americans at that will always choose Spain first.
Add to that the size of the two clubs at the top, players get the salaries as well. There is little a lot of clubs can do in this country to compete. Of course they get it wrong every now and again.
But would you choose Liverpool over Barca?, Man City over Madrid?
7 April 2010 at 1:58 pm #28896The Premier League is the most entertaining League in the World end of. Imagine watching Messi rip apart every team in La Liga, I’d become very predictable. You don’t see 3 teams in for the title in Spain or a relegation dogfight quite like the Prem, oh and the ref’s blow every 10 seconds for a foul…
7 April 2010 at 2:07 pm #28897Dont believe the hype that Sky tell you about the premiership, it isnt that entertaining. In fact the premiership is pretty dull, in the last 15 years we have only had two, now 3 with Chelsea going for the title but Arsenal arent real contenders, like Liverpool werent last year.
We watched Henry, Ronaldo, Rooney rip teams apart similar to Messi does, so nothing really different here. As for the religation dog fight, it only seems more exciting here because its in the news and wigan are part of it. Last season Real Betis were relegate by one goal, zaragoza by a point the year before etc etc.
Money and TV revenue of british football is the only difference, but that wont last for ever. the 50% tax bracket will make some players leave this summer.
7 April 2010 at 3:24 pm #28905Quite simply I prefer the British style of football to the style that is played predominantly in Europe
There’s no doubt that technically some of the foreign leagues are “better” but its played with a different tempo, style & aggression from what rocks my boat (so to speak)
So I guess the “most entertaining” tag is all down to personal taste
That said, the wealth on offer in the premier league & what you lose by going down added to the extra wealth given to a club that reaches the champions league is creating a far bigger gap in terms of squad abilities of the top & bottom of the top flight than I’ve known in my 30 years of watching football & this in turn is changing the approach & attitude of many of its teams – for the worse
I think the same can be said of most European leagues though coz it seems to be the same teams from across the continent competing in the champions league season after season
7 April 2010 at 5:21 pm #28911In La Liga it’s all very pretty, but there’s no physicality. One slightly hard tackle and it’s a foul. That’s how football’s heading I’m afraid, thanks to that tw4t Sepp Blatter. The La Liga is very technical and good to watch. But the passion just isn’t the same, remember Wigan vs Sheff Utd 3 years ago? You’d never see a game like that in Spain and it’s games like that that stick in the memory as the best games.
7 April 2010 at 6:20 pm #28914What are you suggesting Wigan and Sheff Utd should quit the premier league and join the spanish league…….
Ahh yes it all makes sense Gomez will shine there
7 April 2010 at 6:28 pm #28916Why not, football in the sun….just imagine trips to Barcelona, Real Madrid etc and it all topped off with a pre-season tour including games at Bolton, Leigh, Skelmersdale and St Helens
7 April 2010 at 11:28 pm #28934Keys and co last night looked and sounded very p/ssed off after that result. It was almost like the faces of parents after their son had lost his school cup final.
