So which one was the best?

For me, Jewell’s team. Simply because the core of that squad was the same one that took us up two years later and very nearly managed it back-to-back. This years side will smash several of the records that Jewell’s side set but I think the standard was also slightly better back then with 5 or 6 genuine contenders.

IF this team can compete in the Championship then they may just edge it going forward. Trying to pick a team between the 2 squads would be interesting.

The jewell team for me also egg, for exactly the same reasons you mentioned.

However, for me, it just pipped the team that was promoted 2 seasons ago, as that was a brand new team with a rookie manager.

First was the best…..but you always felt promotion was inevitable with the investment. Arguably this was the most important for the next spell of the club.

2002-2003 for me by a country mile I think coz it was the first one & we’d never played at the Championship level before.
In terms of quality of the individual players again I’d have to go for 2002-2003 as it contained so many players who would then go on to be successful top flight players or prove they still had “it” even in their twilight years – Filan, Jackson, McCulloch, Teale, Bullard & Baines not to mention players who were able to compete at the top of the Championship/Div 1 for the next 2 seasons Eaden, Breckin & Jarrett

I can’t see any of the current lot with the exception of Morsy, Burn & Walton being able to reach the same heights – and that’s no disrespect to the current players. Just my personal opinion that they aren’t as good & neither is the division.

Which brings me on to the point you make Egg that there were 5 or 6 genuine contenders – No there wasn’t. It was us & Crewe for most of the season & then we pulled away, finishing 14 points clear of them. The others didn’t finish that far behind Crewe in the end but none of them ever looked like threatening us

Which kind of goes against my point that the division was better in 2002-2003!!

This season, as long as we win the league. We’ve banged goals in galore and been tight at the back. Scored some good goals and had a great run in Cup too.

          Been a cracking season

Paul Jewells promotion probably sticks in the mind because that was the first promotion in the rise to the greed league and maybe memory plays tricks too and at the end of the day PJ had the budget to do it with too which was to his advantage.
However each one of these promotions are equal on merit. Caldwell worked a miracle with a more or less completely new side.
Nothing should be taken away from the absoloutely fantastic achievement by Paul Cook this year though. He picked up on a group of players with their heads down after the relegation and got them playing as a team and believing in themselves again. What other side have we ever had who could go to away grounds and rip the home sides apart. Also best goals for and least against in the league. All this to with a trip to the quarter final of the cup beating three greed league sides on the way which could have been a major distraction.
Tell you what we are all very lucky and priveledged to have witnessed these three brilliant achievements (and many more) and being Latics we will be having a poll for best promotion from The Championship to Greed League sometime in the not too distant future.
In the meantime lets enjoy Paul Cook bringing us the title.

Caldwell because as some said was a new squad

Has to be PJ, he and Hutchings were like Clough and Taylor they couldn’t do wrong. A brilliant few seasons we had back then and no hint of any struggles. A great period in the clubs history. COYL

              For me it’s this season..

Stats wise this season betters them of 2002/03 on nearly all fronts.

We’ve scored 86 goals this season compared with 68 in 02/03.
Goals against, pretty opposite of 02/03 really. Only 10 at home this season which is fantastic. Conceded 16 in 02/03. 17 away but only 10 conceded in 02/03.
We are one win short of equalling 02/03 (29) with 3 games left
Drawn 9 this season compared with 13 in 02/03

2002/03 was a fantastic season and who’d have thought so many players from that squad would have gone on to hold their own in the top two flights of English football?

Going forward depends on how many we keep from this squad. Personally I think we’ve got 7 who could hold their own in the Championship.

It was a new squad, but it was built on Prem money. It was the lowest points tally of the three too so not sure 15/16 can be classed as the best.

For me Caldwell tainted that season with the unprofessionalism he showed with that last week and allowing the players to go on the piss all week. Which resulted in a humiliating home defeat on the final day in front of a massive crowd… Not to mention the slowest after match trophy parade of all previous title wins..
