I travelled down in hope more than anything and was pleasantly surprised with our performance. The lads fought and battled well and we were very unlucky not to come away with a point.
My only criticism was the final 2 subs for me, it through us out of sync and poor defending for their winner (shambolic tbh).
Matty Smith set up Aasgaard for our goal with a beauty daisy cutter then 4 minutes later he was replaced, why ????.
That for me those 2 X 70min subs cost us the game because Sessengnons injury late on left us with no subs left for the last 15 leaving us a man short for their short corner winner.
With 20mins to go you should at least still have 1 sub left 1) for a late knock 2) tired 3) waste time. Maloney nearly every fookin every game has to make 5 subs Why tf does he feels he has to do this is beyond me but overall we battled and gave a £30million squad a run for their money.
The international break might be a blessing, a time to get to know and work on the new lads in training but let’s just hope we can keep that up for the foreseeable future.

I suspect Smith (and all the others) were running on empty the amount of effort that was put in. I agree though that I’d probably have tried to keep one sub back especially as there was gonna be a load of injury time.
I felt there was a turning point in the game on about 35 mins when Snith started to take the ball off Tickle from goal kicks. We stopped lumping the ball forward and tried to play through them and we did it quite well. The Sessegnon sub at half time gave us the impetus and we moved the ball through them and quickly and dangerously. If Rankine had improved his final ball into the box there were times we actually had bodies in there. That said, Rankine finally showed us what he can do.
Came off the ground with a lot of optimism despite the late killer blow
If (and I know it’s a big if) we can play like that at home against the lesser sides then we will be fine.
Maybe “lesser teams” was bad wording. Teams will still come to ours and sit back and make us play through them. It was our biggest downfall last season. Just passed backwards and sideways and unable to break teams down.
A very good performance with many things to be positive about and some very good performances, Rankine the stand out for me.
That said to lob on all the subs as they did was a shocking decision especially with a ref like yesterday , they only had to fall over and he was giving out free kicks.
Should have gained a point but pound for pound we matched if not bettered those big time Charlie’s for a long spell yesterday and the pace of the team caused them lots of problems.
Young players or not with that pace once confidence kicks in there might be some pleasant surprises to come with this bunch.
Maloney has a good eye for a decent player but once he gets his hands on them it goes to pot, we seem to bring players in with a good track record elsewhere, nine times out of ten they turn out to be shite for us.
Their winner came from a 2 man corner and we only had the one man on it I think it was McManaman just waving his arms.
I know the seasons young but when are players ever fit ?. What I mean is, their either tired not played enough or they’ve played too much. You never hear a player say I’m fully fit raring to go.
I’m not so sure M.Smith was that fooked after an hour more about let’s tighten it up and Rankine? he was like an itchy rash he should have definitely been left on.
I feel that with 11 men on the pitch we see it out for a point. Birmingham looked ok nothing worldly special just decent but I wouldn’t say they’ll p*ss it. Were they’ll come on top with is with their big squad and subs, they’ve decent players waiting for their chance.
I think Birmingham might end up like us last season,
They’ll beat the teams that try to play football but struggle against the 10 men behind the ball spoilers.
I don’t think it will be as cut and dry as the press reckon
